After enjoying your meal in Germany, to request the check so that you can pay, you'll ask for “Die Rechnung, bitte.” Pronunciation of the phrase sounds like “dee RECH-nung, BITT-uh,” and, as you may recall, the “bitte” at the end is the German word for “please.”

We lived in Germany in the 70s when it was essential that you know some German to easily travel and deal with the basic day to day things. Over the years, as we've traveled back on vacations we've noticed the dramatic increase in English among average people, to the point that most people you encounter quickly reply in English when you try limited German. We still like to use basic terms like bitte and danke as a gesture to trying to use German.

I was in the German part of Switzerland a few months ago and greeted someone with "Guten Tag". My daughter cringed and face-palmed and the person I said it to giggled.

I learned that the greeting in the German part of of Switzerland is "Gruetzi" which is Swiss German. Fun fact, there is no accepted spelling of Gruetzi as Swiss German is not a formalized language.

Last time in Germany I learned that a request should begin with "Bitte" rather than at the end.
When emailing eastern Swiss hotels, guides, sites such as Mt. Pilatus , etc. my greeting is this spelling of "grüezi", except without the umlaut.
Under 5 months til we land in Paris for the start of a 3-week European trip that includes the Dordogne, Paris, a Rhine River cruise and 8 nights in Switzerland!
