:bawl: Now I'm going to shed a few tears. I'm one of those who prefers a real book to an ebook, and I fondly remember those old encylopedias when we lived in the sticks--nowhere near a library.

Me too. Even though I do most of my research on-line, I do miss the good old-fashioned hard cover reference books. When we were downsizing to move into a condo, I had an old set of encyclopedias from 1964 with about 10 years of the annual books as well. We thought they would be a good addition to our local elementary school as the teachers there always want the children to include hard cover reference books for the childrens' bibliography in their research papers, but sadly they were refused as they didn't have room in their library!! So they went to the recycling company. It took me a while before I could bring myself to do that.

Yeah, it's a nostalgia thing for me more than anything. I just look back at times when we just didn't have much and we were pretty isolated in the back country, and these were hand-me-downs, yet such a world opened for us in those old pages.

Count me in! I'd rather have a good, solid book in my hand than any type of reader. Just wait until the evil hackers learn how to install viruses onto downloadable books!!! Won't happen with printed material.
The picture on all of the ads around here is George R. R. Martin's book, "A Dance With Dragons" (book 5, BTW). I saw an ad with the first page showing and it showed about half that of my printed version. Now, I don't know anything about the readers, but I hope you can get more on a page then that.

The day is coming when paper-based books, magazines and newspapers will occupy a climate-controlled display case in the Smithsonian Museum of American History, along with the Apple II computer and Apolo Ono's ice skates, as cultural curiosities.

Some of these may continue to be socked away in library "rare book" and private collections, but physical publication will eventually be phased out as uneconomical.
