Don't know where to post this but everyone should know.

I got an email from IRS telling me that I was in arrears.

Nice way to start the morning.

Called IRS and they don't send out emails so someone somewhere was trying to get my info.

IRS agent gave me an email address to send the bogus email to so they can investigate.

My spam filter seems to catch these things. That said, phishing is on the rise and is increasingly sophisticated. Many people are taken in and simply click on the provided link instead of calling a known or listed phone number whether it's the IRS, their bank, insurance carrier, or whoever they suspect is trying to get personal information that a legitimate firm or agency would already have. i.e., IRS won't email you asking for your SS# or your bank won't call and ask for your account # or birth date. Duh!

tip off

If you look at the details or properties of the email, you'll see that these IRS emails often originate in a 3rd world country or from a free-public email acct (yahoo, gmail, etc.). That's another tip-off that they are bogus, so just right click on the email and go to details/properties.

I keep getting emails for Bank Ki Moon (UN Secretary General). They are full of grammatical and spelling errors and usually about have way through change from the first person to the third person, usually in mid-sentence, and suddenly it's an aid of Dr. Moon writing.

It's almost always somebody's stolen email address in the header and a reply to a public mail server in the letter.

Funnier still, are the letters from the Federal Investigation Bureau, which read like google translate.

But here's a question, what the &^$&*$** is an ACH? It appears to be an electronic payment or something, but I am forever getting spam emails about a failed ACH. I finally just had Apple mail send everything with failed ACH to the Trash bin.

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House, which is the network that clears almost all electronic interbank transactions in the US.

haha...I got my first PayPal scam email litterally within hours of opening my account.

That probably just coincidence. I regularly get PayPal scam e-mails sent to my generic e-mail account, which is not connected to PayPal in anyway. The e-mail accounts I have set up with PayPal are ones that I only provide selectively, and I get no Paypal spam on those accounts (and very little other spam as well).
