Electric-vehicle sales crossed a global milestone last year, achieving around 10% market share for the first time, driven mainly by strong growth in China and Europe, according to fresh data and estimates.

While EVs still make up a fraction of car sales in the U.S., their share of the total market is becoming substantial in Europe and China, and they are increasingly influencing the fortunes of the car market there as the technology goes mainstream. The surge in EV sales also contrasted with the broader car market that suffered from economic worries, inflation and production disruptions.


Around the world, E.V. sales were projected to have grown 60 percent in 2022


There are now almost 30 million electric vehicles on the road in total, up from just 10 million at the end of 2020. E.V. market share has also tripled since 2020.

Not real well. The technology is evolving to make them more practical for differing environments. Not everyone will find an ev to meet their needs at this point. But over time they will become a greater share of the market.

I think the hybrids are the best option for reducing carbon emissions most quickly by utilizing existing technology and resources. More people would be likely to buy them because they've been proven to work, cost less than EV's, and don't require dramatic behavioral change. I'd also be interested in seeing these statistics. It's a shame that some auto manufacturers are abandoning hybrid development in pursuit of EV's.

PHEVs make up 4% when compared to the 10% BEV number, and the PHEV numbers are declining. Of course. They are heavier. Many are all wheel drive, The cabin heat/defrost is almost instantaneous due to either being resistance electric or heat pump.

Yes, the range is reduced by a percentage- our PHEV is off about 30% from when it was new, but it's coming up on it's 5th birthday, and it's winter. We bought it in August. Still, there are still about 35 miles available before the ICE starts. Easily enough miles for our day-to-day wandering around town on $1.50 worth of electrons.

The same thing can be said about the cement hauler that ran a red light and T-boned me on the driver's side.

You're more likely to suffer a financial loss from some yahoo driving a beater with minimum or no coverage than some affluent person in an EV.

What are some pros and cons regarding the weight?

pros
-tend to handle better, grip the road
-the weight is lower than similar weight SUVs, Trucks, and Hummers so EVs rarely have roll-overs
-again, EVs tend to be lower to the road so that weight isn't accidentally plowing into children & other pedestrians that the driver can't see from so high up

cons
-may cause more damage to other vehicles in accidents
-more wear and tear on roads than similar sized non-EV cars
-requires higher tire pressure & can wear tires faster

When I drove from Vegas to Denver mid winter over mountains I simply needed to plan my route and drive a bit more slowly in order to get there. I needed to stop and charge a fair bit but the main difference between doing that trip in winter vs summer is that in summer I can drive faster & spend less time at the chargers. Both times it would take 2 days with an overnight midway, the same as how I drive it in an RV.
