I have been hanging around these boards for awhile now. I would always kind-of snicker when someone said, oh no, I bought another time share.

Well, tonight ,looking for something else, I bought an EOY Shadow Ridge
($2,800). I HATE the desert! Well, here was my thinking; and please tell me what you think...

We own 1 plat. wk at NCV. We live about 7 hours away so drive there - we LOVE it. I would like more weeks at NCV but don't want to spend that much. We always use it and rent 3-4 more weeks through Getaways, etc.
Down side is no lock-off. There are just two of us. We are retired and can travel anytime (within driving distance) and enjoy the off season.

I thought I would split the Shadow ridge unit, deposit both sides with II and use to exchane to NCV (flexchange?) That would give us two more weeks.

Is it possible? What suuggestions or tips do you have?:whoopie:

of course it has to pass ROFR; but it looks like Marriott hasn't picked up these weeks for awhile.

One more thing, I am sleeping in guest room tonight, so would love your feedback!!!!

Yep, that's very possible, but usually in flexchange. I have a couple of Shadow Ridge units and I plan to do just that if I don't trade for points. I can pull up everything (except Four Seasons) during the flexchange time, especially NCV. Good choice! I'm like you, I don't like the desert but Palm Springs is actually starting to grow on me. You might get to like it but if you don't, NCV is just 2 hrs the other direction.

Heidi, It is my understanding I won't be able to exchange for Points s,ince I bought resale. Or, were you talking aboutr Red Week Points? Are there any other exhanges you think if possible for NCV beside II?

Hi,
Basically you paid $5600 ($2800 for EOY) for Gold Shadow Ridge 2 bedroom lockout. Based on the recent ROFR a $5600 Gold annual would pass so your EOY should also pass. Mine failed early 2008 for $2750 but the economy has changed.

I personally think your idea of locking it out, trading into NCV is great. You may even get AC's and may be able to trade into NCV outside of Flextime.

Try visiting Palm Desert in the winter. We love it. So much to see and do...or just go to NCV:)

If you are retired and can travel on short notice, flexchange is great!! However, you can get cheaper weeks to use for flexchange. Any Marriott will get you a NCV week during flex.

I purchased a Marriott Summit Watch bronze ($1,500) that I lock-off and use for flex. The annual fees were just under $1,000 last year, this year should be around $1,060.

Your Shadow Ridge would trade better than SW bronze outside of flexchange. So it would give you more options. Sounds like you got a good price, congrats!

Thanks Quimby, I saw yours on the ROFR list, hence my bid.
BTW,Thanks to everyone that keeps the data up to date on the Marriott Board. It is so helpful:cheer:

Heidi-
I can see Four Seasons in flexchange with my Summit Watch bronze. I've booked Aviara at least 4 times and recently booked Scottsdale.

Oh sorry about that. I meant to say in my case, I bought primarily to exchange for points and on the side, I noticed that the unit traded well to NCV. You are correct. If you buy on the resale market, the only restriction you have is that you cannot trade for points. It sounds like you made the right decision to buy resale since it seems you want to trade within Marriott timeshares, specifically NCV, so buying resale is a good fit.

You probably won't need to trade with other exchange companies (I don't know much about them). I am looking for NCV during Thanksgiving with my AC from my Shadow Ridge 1 bd deposit. I see NCV every day, lots of availability, but just not the dates I want. If you don't have school vacation restriction, you should have no problems. Congratulations on your purchase!

Heidi, dumb question, but since I have never exchanged:
; Do you access "flexchange" just through the "exchange tab at II and just put the next 60 days in?

Lisa,
My goal is to be as good of a trader as you! I have to figure out what I am doing wrong. I think I may have used my AC to search and could not see a Four Seasons but I could with my deposit. I have to test it to see.

Yes - and that's not a dumb question. Click on the exchange tab but put the date range as no further than 59 days from now. Today I was searching from Nov 1 to Dec 27, which was the last day in flexchange.

Thanks Heidi, that made me smile! And on that happy note, I'm off to bed!

And yes Andar, flexchange is just like a regular search with II. Just put in your dates and everything in the next 59 days is the Flexchange exchanges. There are some resorts that don't lift all restrictions during Flex, so you might not see everything available.

The Strategy Works

Your strategy should work just fine in Flexchange. We bought a silver week at Horizons Branson for less than $1,000 and fees less than $700. We have traded in flexchange for Vegas, Orlando in winter (Sabal) and I just snagged a week at Waiohai (Kauai) at Christmas! Works great for us. Since we live in the midwest, we may even actually go to Branson sometime..........

I looked at the week you bought, and it overlaps with plat at NCV. Will you be using this week for the 13 month advantage as well?

Thanks for all your feedback. I am out of the dog house now as the other half doesn't think I am totally crazy. :whoopie:

Yes, Ray, one reason I wanted to own one more Marriott was for the 13 month reservation option - Especially at NCV.

I paid with paypal, the company contacted me today and already has the paperwork ready to go in. I just emailed them regarding ROFR.
I hate to get too excited until we see if it passes.

Well to add to the excitement,
I purchased a Plat. membership off ebay for Shadow Ridge at $8,100.00. I was told thru escrow that it was approved by Marriott, so now I am just waiting to finalize the close. Since I like Palm Springs for long weekends, I plan to use another timeshare, the Welk Resort to stay since it is cheaper, but use the Marriott facilities during the day. My kids love the waterslides.
Now, thru, TUG, I am trying to figuring out what is the best way to capitalize on my Marriott Timeshare.

LAX Mom: When you are doing Flex exchanges - does that mean you are almost out of time to make use of that particular week? In other words if something didn't appeal to you in those 45 days you would lose that week? Or are you just typing in hypothetical dates?

Is the data base on a sticky somewhere? I can't seem to find it now.

Cathy-

Flexchange is the period 59 days prior to check-in at the resort you want to visit. It has nothing to do with the unit you have deposited and are using to book the exchange.

Anytime you do a search on II anything that shows for the next 59 days is Flexchange. I see much more inventory than if I search 6-8 months in advance.

For my family, Flexchange actually works better. We have 3 sons who stay very busy with sports & school activities. Right now, I have no idea what committments my sons will have next summer. I've booked weeks months in advance (Newport Coast Villas, Ko'Olina) and had to cancel because as it got closer to the check-in date no one in the family could go. So I prefer to book on short notice, it just works better with our schedules.
