I’m curious if someone can answer this. Why on Earth do people bid on timeshares on eBay when the auction has 6 or 9 days before it closes? When they start bidding early it only runs the price up higher and higher. I understand this is good for the seller, but not so much for the buyer. Wouldn’t it be smarter if bidders waited until the day before the auction closes or day of to start bidding so it wouldn’t run up the price?
I’m just asking not judgin.

I always chalk it up to people not understanding how ebay works, or shill bidders. I bid in the last 10 seconds so it's not me. :p

I used to collect old casino chips and would occasionally buy chips on Ebay. The reason I bid early was to accumulate everything I was interested in in one place on My Ebay. I don't know if the My Ebay site is different now or not...

Many bidders know what they want to bid, and bid the maximum they are willing to spend. Then, if they win, they buy it. If they don't win they don't care (since they have already established their own price ceiling) and they move on to another auction.

I know my maximum bid in an auction, but I use a snipe service to make my bid -- which is automatically made six seconds before the auction closes. If I win, I win, and if I lose, I lose, but I never lose because someone reacted to my bid and bid against me specifically.

I think some people bid early as an alternative to watching or tracking it. They bid something super low, knowing full well they won't win it. They will get automatic email updates when the auction ends.

To ascertain if there is any interest in the timeshare would be one reason, I usually wait till the last day to bid with a autobid set up with my max bid. Sometimes folks get caught up with the frenzy of the bidding, it becomes more of a pissing war, very good for the seller.

K thanks for your thoughts. I also believe mostly it’s people who don’t understand Ebay. I also use snipe and larger items as I know outbidding a person just runs the price up higher.

Bidding strategy can depend on the item and your strategy.

What's interesting is that bidding has pretty much vanished from eBay except for a few items. It's a "buy it now" world.

Anyway, a friend of mine bids on comic books. He put in low bids not expecting to win, but occasionally, he does win and gets a bargain. He bids on lots of items, so he doesn't care when he bids.

As someone said above, it's also a way to track what something is selling for by getting email notifications.

I am in the "bid at the last second" camp and have used a sniping service, but for most things I buy on ebay now I just look for "buy it now" items. I don't really buy and rare or collectable items, however.

I sometimes bid at the starting price just to lock down an item I'm interested in, where I will be bidding more at the end via a snipe.

It's slightly more difficult for the seller to cancel or remove an auction if there are bids on it.

I always look at the buyers feedback score and stay away from the ones with (0) feedback bidders. The auctions that are run up are by a (0) feedback or a shill bidder. You will notice these are usually relisted when the (0) feedback buyer doesn't follow through on the purchase.

Shill Bidders are a real problem and I won't bid on anything that has "Private Listing -- Bidders Identity Hidden". Private listings are an invitation for shill bidding!

I also will not bid on a private listing. It is worse then bidding against a shill bidder with a hidden identity.

I actually do not understand why in this day and age that "Private Listings" are even allowed on eBay.

Years ago, anyone could contact any other bidder on ebay, but that option has long since been eliminated, so no one knows who really is bidding on an auction anymore other than by looking at the first and last character of their handle (in addition to the number of feedbacks). Private Listings hide everything!

If Jim is running a Private Listing auction then he could ask his cousin Bill to keep bidding up the price and no one would ever know about it. The winning bidder artificially pays thru the nose in this case if shill bidding did exist.

Shame on eBay for continuing to allow "Private Listings" which leads to identity hidden shill bidding.

What difference does it make? If you are sniping, you are bidding what you are willing to pay. If someone bids more---shill or not---no skin off your nose, because you aren't going to pay more than your bid. If you win, you win at a price no higher than you were willing to pay in the first place.

No objections to legitimate bidders who bid higher. I DO OBJECT to shill bidders who artificially inflate the price for the benefit of the seller. Additionally, it is not only unethical, it is illegal.

It also is relisted when the shill bidder doesn't complete the purchase. This helps on the platforms relisting fees. I buy direct from exit companies or their resale companies without the hassles of bidding against a shill. Buying direct from exit companies is always less then closing costs or free with Timeshare nation.

I have been an eBay member since the beginning (1998) and have almost 1000 feedback (all purchases). my reasoning applies to everything on eBay, not just timeshares. I bid on something I want when I see it because a) I have a max in my mind All in That I am willing to spend and don’t get emotional about it b) I don’t want to forget to get my bid in or have To calendar It to remember (Main reason here - I have a lot going on in my professional life) c) I don’t want to pay a sniping service d) I really think sniping is unfair and don’t personally want bad karma, it’s really a shitty way to game the system e) with very few exceptions most everything on eBay is not one of a kind and will come around again eventually f) I am not desperate and g) every now and then you will get an awesome bargain you didn’t expect to win.

Now that being said, there are occasions where I will refresh and watch it countdown if it is something I like a lot i may be willing to bid a bit higher in the heat of the moment, however, I figure if it is meant to be mine, it will be.

if you prefer to game the system by sniping, good for you. But just know that you ARE cheating and that‘s not cool. You can go ahead and reframe it how you like, but the truth is the truth.

In my book, this is the kind of gaming the system that is right up there with people that only buy resale timeshares.
