I'm currently hanging out in the San Luis Obispo, CA area. When I drove down here from Seattle, I jumped off the 5 north of Sacramento, took the 680 east of Oakland, and then the 101 continuing south. That worked OK, but the traffic on the 680 and the 101 through Salinas was unpleasantly congested.

So for my return trip, I'm considering taking the 41 from SLO over to the 5, and then proceeding north on it. It looks like this route is maybe just a little bit longer, but hopefully less congested???

Thanks for any comments or suggestions on this! :)

I think it will all depend on when you're traveling. We're in the San Francisco Bay area, and we've experienced traffic both on 680/101 and on 5. Usually when we would drive south we'd cut over on 580 then head south on 5, but this was when we would be going all the way to southern California. We could hit traffic on 5 both going south and heading north. We've also come back from southern California on 101, up to 680. Usually the worst congestion is right around San Jose, not Salinas. I don't have any experience with 41.

It's not longer, and certainly faster. I drive to SLO several times a year and it's always faster to go I-5.
