First time user, should have found this site BEFORE our visit to Maui.

We attended a DRI timeshare presentation earlier this week and ended up purchasing points in the system. For background we have two boys that are old enough to start travelling and we want to begin showing them the world, so we do like the idea of vacation unit timeshares. Not sure this was the best way to do it though and would like some feedback:

The purchase was for 7,500 DRI points yearly in the 'Hawaii' Collection. An additional 7500 bonus points were provided, a 'member orientation' stay for 2 nights, and two 'Dream Week' stays in what appear to be solid resorts (Hawaii, Florida, New York/DC, cruise, etc). The cost is $23,953 with maintenance fees of $1750 per year.

Our idea is the purchase should get us a week a year at a good resort (two bedrooms) with the purchased points, another single week with the bonus points, and two additional weeks with the 'Dream Weeks'. That would make a great start for family travel plans.

That said $24,000 plus $1750/year would be a lot of travelling as well.

Feedback? And thanks in advance....

When did you sign the contract? In Hawaii, you have 7 calendar days to rescind. I would suggest you do this. $24,000 +$1750 a year isn't chump change. You an buy this on the resale market for pennies on the retail dollar for exactly the same produce (less the bonuses)

Welcome to TUG!

Thanks for the initial replies - agree about this being a sizeable purchase. We just bought on Tuesday, the paperwork indicates we have until Tuesday August 6th at midnight to rescind.

Not to mention that the 'cost of use' read, airfare to Hawaii for the family on top of the annual nut. Unless you are REALLY committed to Maui. I think there are FAR better choices. You should rescind then study at the 'college of TUG', and decide what is best for you. This 'deal' will always be available if it's the 'right' deal, but I think you'll find it isn't.

This is GOOD. We'd suggest you don't go near the sales room unless you want the pressure to rise exponentially. Rescind by mail (USPS) The instructions and address are in the contract. Include a COPY of the signature page for ID purposes and send it UPS Certified w/return receipt. Write that you'll send back their promotional materials under separate cover.

While it is true you can buy DRI Points resell for a lot less than Developer DRI Points there is a large negative to resell DRI Points. They can ONLY be used in their Home Collection. They can not be used to Book Directly into any of the other DRI Collections. Nor can they be used at any of the Affiliates. Most of The DRI accessible Resorts in Hawaii are affiliates. So if you buy DRI Resell in the Hawaiian Collection they can only be used at the about 5 Resorts in the Hawaiian Collection, two of which are in CONUS. If you buy DRI Resell Points in the USA Collection again they can only be used to Book directly into DRI USA Collection. So no direct access to Mexico, Europe, Asia, South Pacific, etc.

Buying resell is not necessarily the best path for everyone. I know this runs counter to 95% of the advice you will receive on this Forum.

Your price works out to about $3.10 per Point. A bit more that we paid last August at KBC but still a fair price for DRI Hawaiian Collection.

A 2 Bedroom for a week at KBC will cost you 15,500 to 21,000 DRI Points depending on the season.

A 2 Bedroom at Point at Poipu will cost you 8,500 to 19,500 Points depending on the view and time of year.

Rescind Immediately, no question about it! DRI is not the most desirable timeshare company to begin with. You should spend time to do your research. There are so many options that might fit with your needs better. Rescind before next Tuesday!

We stayed at KBC in June. It was better than OK, but for $17,000 and $1750 a year, I'd make a different choice. AND to add, if you NEED 2.5X those 7500 points, how do you feel about only being able to stay for 3 days, or spending over $20,000 above this purchase. I am not sold that timeshare at this level is the right purchase for your family.

Thanks again for all the great responses and feedback. We've been watching and discussing the posts and feedback, and are planning to rescind the purchase. Getting past the emotional attachment to traveling and the resorts two things are major concerns:

- Jim's and Lisa H's points that that we should research and get educated on timeshares before making a large purchase. Couldn't agree more, even if that is being done retrospectively
- Geist1223's comment that a week at KBC in a 2 bedroom will be far greater than our point purchase. We were told by the sales rep it would, but were never shown the specific reservation material. I'm hesitant to register on the system and verify the cost given we are not committed.

Overall the DRI offer doesn't seem terrible, that thought may change as we get educated on the timeshare industry. If not we'll try to get the deal back someday - no doubt there will still be offers.....

Again thank you all for the quick feedback - I'll look forward to becoming part of the community in the future.

You are educating yourself -- that is a good thing.

Should you conclude that DRI/KBC is what you want, the deal you were given will still be available. But if you do not rescind now, rescission will not be available.

Consider carefully that you purchased 7500 points, less than half the number of points you will need to reserve a two bedroom at KBC (even during low season; see post #9). Interpolating from that, you would need double what you bought for your annual vacation. For $50K and $3,500/year, you can do much better than KBC.

I couldn't have said it better. Rescind while you can.

Rescind. You are paying $24k too much. There is a free 10k and 4.5k DRI available at TSN.

https://www.timesharenation.com/resort/Diamond-Resorts

These resell Points can only be used to Book directly into the US Collection and none of the affiliates. Not even the affiliates listed under the US Collection in the Directory. So you say good bye to all Affliiates, Hawaii, Mexico, Europe, etc. This is a decision then needs to be made with all the facts and the travel desires of the person making the decision. Price is a very important part of the decision but it is only one part of the decision. Since we bought into DRI Hawaiian Collection 4 years ago we have spent 2 weeks in France, a week in Mexico, and several weeks in Hawaii. It helps if you already own in a separate timeshare system because then you can enroll in Club Select/Club Combination. This gives you more options.

Also your Maintenance Fees do not actually double when you double your DRI Developer Points. If you buy separate Resell Accounts they are not combined into a single Contract/Account. While they may be under one membership number they maintain their separate Account status. This can lead to problems with Booking and higher maintenance fees.
