This is a cute and refreshing article when there is so much negative news. At least our pets are happy!

Dogs, at Least, Love Home Quarantine
Mine and I still walk, and we talk a whole lot more.
By Alexandra Horowitz
Dr. Horowitz is a cognitive scientist who studies dogs.

Next to me on the couch, one of my dogs twitches his feet and curls his lower lip in his sleep. His tail thumps on a soft pillow. An “urph” — maybe a stifled bark — escapes his mouth and he wakes himself up, looking at me accusingly. “That was you!” I tell him.

As a writer and dog-cognition researcher, I can — and do — spend the greatest part of the day observing dogs, talking to dogs and hanging out beside my dog while working. And now, in this extraordinary time, many more of us find ourselves working at home with our dogs full time. Good for us — and great for the dogs...

Mr. Bear just loves being able to take me for walks. We go out 2-3 times a day. It's good for both of us.

That moment during self-quarantine when your dogs agree having you home all day is a good thing. :)

That is too bad. I thought NY Times gave potential readers a few free articles. I am a subscriber.

Where I live people cannot even take their dogs out for a walk or for them to relieve themselves. We have a house no dog at the moment but in the city there are tens of thousands of dogs in high rises that I am not sure what is being done but walking your dog risks a ticket or jail.

Panama. Just updated today that can be taken out once a day. Thankfully here the government and most people are taking it serious like it should be.

Thanks for posting Joe Buck's video, Talent312. As a lover of labs and golden retrievers (sadly, no longer have a furry companion), that video was fun to watch and brought back lots of wonderful memories. :)

Most countries, other than the USA, are locked down pretty hard.

Canada has about 1/2 the infection rate than the US on a per capita basis. There are a variety of reasons for this, including the global movement patterns of people; but, the willingness of Canada's elected officials to listen to their public health officials is clearly a variable.

Canadian provincial governments are also responsible for the health care costs of 100% of their residents. Money spent on public health saves government $$.

Protect the herd.

My dogs need to go out several times a day. Once a day would be impossible and result in many accidents in the home.

Luckily by Salem standards we have a large backyard. Felix likes to go out and just check it out. I remember 2 years ago when we brought him home from the shelter he could not believe it was all his. I have spoiled him and take him out about anytime he wants to go out. Salem has shut down Dog Parks because they allege people were not honoring the safe distance rule. Now I can kind of understand this with most of the Dog Parks in Salem because they are small and fenced. But Minto Brown Island Park is about 500+ acres and the "Dog off Lease area" is about 20 acres. It has large fields, trails in the trees, large fields with high grass, etc. Just a Dog Heaven. They have also closed it. Felix and I went there about 5 days a week. Sometimes in the AM and sometimes in the PM. There were never hugh crowds and people always maintained their safe distance. When I tried to reason with the City Government they refused to listen to reason. So what the Dog owners are doing is park in a different Parking Lot in the Park and then walk their dogs on lease until they get to the off leash area and let their dogs go.

Just wondering how folks are dealing with their dogs that love to kiss. I have a little dog that loves to hug me and kiss my face. I can‘t resist her. I kiss her back. This seems awfully unsafe in coronavirus time. Should I put some limits on the kisses? LOL

Still smooching on my dogs. They are with me all the time. While there's an off chance that they picked something up on our walks, chances are about the same that I picked up something on my shoes at the same time. Wipe down their faces and paws is really the only thing I'm willing to do differently with them.

If one of us gets sick, that person moves to the guest house. JB Orange Cat will insist on being out there with the sick person (or stand at the door having a cow) so he'll have to go into quarantine himself and not be allowed to travel back and forth. And there's no not petting him when he wraps his paws around your neck for "vampire kisses". I was surprised Chris Cuomo was bemoaning that his dog didn't want to keep him company in the basement during quarantine because I don't think you want an infected person petting the dog and then sending him back upstairs to be handled by the rest of the family.

I had not thought of this. If one of us gets sick, we will need to quarantine the dogs. They will suffer a lot because they want to be with both of us. That will be the hardest part of the quarantine to manage. The cat just likes me so that will be easier to control. Maybe, maybe not. She does use her kitty litter downstairs and she likes to roam the house when she is not with me. Having pets is hard. We pet owners certainly sacrifice a lot for them. They are our children.

Felix is a very social Dog and loves visiting with people and dogs as they walk past our House. Almost no one is out walking due to the bad air from the fires in the Salem area. So he is not happy. The other day a woman walked by and he was over joyed to visit. He did not want her to leave and kept putting himself in front of her. She was laughing as I called him back to the front porch.
