Meet my good friend Kenney.

He’s a Pomsky..

He always acts different when he knows I’m getting ready for vacation. Here are some of the things he does:

1. He brings me his leash, bone toys and one of his dog dishes. If my suitcase is open, he places these items in my suitcase.

2. As I pack, he jumps in my suitcase and snuggles into my clothes.

3. Let’s not forget the sad eyes he gives me.

4. He whines the day I am packing.

5. His demeanour, I think, is designed to make me feel bad. It works too...I always feel bad not bringing him along.

Kenney is lucky. Even though he whines as I take him to my son’s place, he knows there is no kennel for him. My son says he looks out the window all day and goes nuts when he sees me walking up the step to take him home.

Boy, dogs are smart.

Do you have a pet that senses you going away and how do they act?

They sure are happy when you get back.

Your presence triggers the reward center of your dog’s brain and makes him very happy, which is why she’s always excited to see you no matter how long you’ve been gone.

Dogs even recognize and respond to their owners’ voices, faces and smell with a quality of joy that scientists have compared to that between children and their parents.

Felix notices when the suitcases are placed on the bed and clothes start going in them. He starts acting sad. He gets more clingy. Which is a lot considering he is normally a 75 pound Velcro Dog. As we drive out the howling starts. When we get home he is so wiggly and excited he can't take the time to go to the bathroom even if it has been 6 to 8 hours since he has been out. So we have to stay outside until he has calmed down enough to go to the bathroom.

Patti says the cats climb in her suitcase as she packs.

I have cats.....as cats they like to pretend they don't give a crap what I do. But, I know the truth.....I have had to throw away more than one suitcase because my bratty one thinks if she uses it as a little box I won't be able to go.

Mr. Bear gets nervous when we break out the suitcases. He sticks pretty close. Then on the big day, he's a little reluctant to go for a ride with me in my pickup. When we get to the boarding kennel- he's stayed there when we travel ever since he came to live with us- he gets all excited to play with his buddies there. He has his own 'bedroom' (crate), and he's very used to the place. To him, I'm sure it's just another 'home'. He's happy to go, and happy to come home. He's just a happy boy and is well loved wherever he is.

When we picked him up last weekend after about 3 weeks at 'Auntie Bev's', they told us that he barks a lot- which he doesn't at home, and he was actually hoarse, and his usual loud bark had turned into a squeeky little voice. I don't know what's up with this, but suspect that as his blindness becomes more profound, he feels more isolated and is more lonely. The barking is his way of calling someone to give him the attention he thinks he deserves. That's just a guess, because I don't speak 'dog'.

JB Orange Cat is in the suitcases as soon as they are put on the bed. Mocha takes no interest. JB, the official greeter cat anyway, never begrudges us having been gone, and always cheerfully welcomes us home. When Scooter was alive she'd snub us for 2-3 hours. Our dearly departed Lucy came trot trot trot down from the second story when we lived in our Victorian house once when we'd been gone 3 weeks -- she took one look, said "oh, it's you" and trotted right back up the stairs. This October we spent a week in Carlsbad. For the 5-6 years preceding that trip, every evening Mocha would rummage in her toy basket and bring me a steady stream of mouse toys as I watched TV in the bedroom. After this trip I went three weeks without a mouse. I don't know if she didn't like the new cat feeder, or what (not like feeder would ever lay eyes on her, she let's JB do the greeting and stays in the closet when strangers are around), but she was definitely pissed at us. I am finally back to getting mouse patrol, but only once or twice per evening and only black mice or Chrismice (red head and green back). I've rearranged her toys, thrown some non-starters out, put the white, brown and blue mouses on top of the mouse pile in the toy basket, but she has seemingly no use for those colors anymore. Cats, why'd it have to be cats!

Drove our cat (on avatar) and dog to boarding yesterday for today's trip. Cat is usually calm and friendly. Despises the car, howled during the entire 15 min ride then let it all go - poop, and vomit in his carrier.

Poor kitty, I felt badly for him because he's fastidious.

LoL I feel even sorrier for the vet tech who took the carrier to the back and has to clean him up. Better her than me! She seemed unfazed...not so sure about the cat.

Word of warning: treats in the Trader Joe's cat advent calendar have the same results on one or both of our cats. I was glad the nightlight in the bathroom was bright enough for me to see the puddle on the floor at 4am this morning. We were already a week behind, with treats piling up on the counter near the calendar because I'd already been suspicious that they weren't agreeing with someone. Out to the trash today.

A couple months ago I picked up my parents spaniel from the kennel because they were extending a trip by a few days. I was around...so I took the dog. Well....something was not right with the dog. She drank a lot when she arrived at my place and proceeded to vomit it up. I thought she was dehydrated so I took her to an ER vet (it was a Sunday). That little dog exploded from the back end.....all over the waiting room, the walls, the seats. I was mortified. As I wrapped every possible surface in my car with piddle pads for the trip home I thought to myself. That wasn't so bad. It wasn't in my house or my car and I certainly didn't have to clean it.

Sometimes Kenney will do, what I call, a protest poop in the truck when I take him to my son’s place. It’s his way of getting back at me I suppose.

When Inky realized Cliff’s affections were now being shared with me, I quickly learned that my clothes needed to be put away or he’d poop or pee on them. Then he figured out that I fed canned food, so he begrudgingly decided I wasn’t so bad.

My last dog, a Golden, was always nonchalant about us leaving.
He knew someone would be by with food & a treat pretty soon,
and with a dog-door, he did as he pleased.
