I'm looking to purchase rci points account but not sure if it will have what I'm looking to trade into with points. In your experience does rci have availability for the San diego/Carlsbad resorts?

You might want to look at resales at the Grand Pacific resorts if you’re interested in the San Diego/Carlsbad area.

Sometimes there are freebies offered on TUG’s Free Timeshare Forum (link).

For example

In my experience, there is limited summer available if at all. Over winter there is some.

A general timeshare rule of thumb is that if you want to stay regularly at a popular destination and season, you should buy a resale that provides direct access rather than relying on exchange companies. That's a general rule so there certainly are exceptions, but I think it's applicable in North County San Diego, particularly during summer and Christmas/New Years.

The Beach Club at St. Augustine Beach, FL (1 floating week, purchased in 1982)

77,000 RCI points (Sunrise Ridge Resort, TN)
I just logged into our RCI Points account and without putting any dates in searched for 7 night stays in the San Diego area. It shows 12 resorts with mainly October 2024 to April 2025 dates and all but 2 are for just hotel rooms or studios. One (Gaslamp Suites) has a very few weeks left in June/July.

If you end up getting (hopefully for free) a points timeshare and have your heart set on staying in that area for a specific time frame, then set up an Ongoing Search a year or so in advance.

I often see availability of various Carlsbad resorts on RCI. Whether it is in the weeks you would need to be interested in is the question. If you are flexible as to when to visit, you find plenty of options, imo.

New Years in Carlsbad is a literal ghost town. Shockingly so.

We own a fixed week 52 in Solana Beach, and that has equally high demand as summer as indicated by trade value. On the occasions when we deposit for exchange, it usually taken almost instantly. When we have used, the resort is almost always fully occupied.

The same was true for Christmas/NYE when I owned Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad. Those weeks were snatched up by owners as soon as the reservation window opened up for owner reservations.

Here’s Interval International’s travel demand index for the area.

Iirc the Four Seasons includes weeks 51/52 in gold season, where they are easily the highest TDI.

Yes, there’s higher demand than availability for the holiday season.

Friendly reminder: Exchange Company Sightings should be posting on the Sightings Forum - this is a perk of TUG membership.
