I have an older corporate Legacy Plan. 550 min wife has unlimited data, I have 4gb data. Been holding on now to the unlimited for as long as possible. Paid full price for her iphone 6 a few months back to avoid any changes to my plan. Will have to see what happens now. They are forcing a move.

This is just plain old wrong!

We have unlimited data family plan thru DH's employer. Thought too we would have to switch to data quotas when we renewed earlier this year. We HAD to get new phones cause our batteries were on their last legs. Was pleasantly surprised to find on next billing statement that we still had unlimited data. We renewed and ordered new phones online. Don't know if online ordering made the difference. But we agreed to another 2 year term.

Yes, we do, but still under contract, and I think the price hike doesn't go into effect until the contract's up. But we'll see what happens in Nov.

Ordering online most likely helped you. I went to the Verizon store and they could not make it work despite the fact that I wanted to pay full freight to pay for the iphone. I called and spoke to a rep who make it all happen. I even got a discount on my samsung 5, and kept my 4gb legacy plan.

But I am just a few months in to a 2 year contract, so I wonder if this buys me more time... Just like you.

Our monthly bill went up about $10. But our data usage for 3 people is not heavy.

Yes it certainly helped on cost of the phones, which were anywhere between $50-100;more per phone in Verizon store. We were way past our original 2 year contract when we renewed .

I'd guess that in paying full price for phones, most will pay far more trying to keep an unlimited data plan than they'd ever spend just paying for the data they use.

I have Verizon, and I HAD unlimited Data. My device went bad and they said I could not get that plan anymore, had to go with 4G. Didn't want to do it, was going to cost a lot more money but no option. Years later was told that I could have had it still , grandfathered in but of coarse they had no record of that hours in conversation to benefit me at all.

I would make them send it in writing to you confirming that it really is not available for future battles.

you speak of price hike, mine was $60 a month, now I pay $325 for 50 gigs and have to stop using it at the end of the month. No movies, no streaming, just plane internet

They probably hated to see you get a new phone. You were still continuing to pay a portion of the monthly bill for the phone which was already paid off. Once you get a new phone, the portion of the monthly bill will go to the new phone.

I had unlimited data on Verizon for a long time, on a shared plan with my spouse. When it was time to upgrade last year, we looked at how much data we actually were using. It was less than the minimum plan they were offering. Since we both needed new phones, we dropped the unlimited, and went with the minimum program. It's been fine - as I type this we are four days away from the end of the billing cycle month, and we still have nearly half the data allowance left. For us, it worked out.

As long as you're not streaming video, even with fairly heavy usage their middle plans should handle things. We are heavy iPhone/iPad users and have about half a dozen devices on ours with a shared 15GB plan (grandfathered at $100/month), and we don't even come close to hitting the limit. We've averaged 5.7 GB/month over the past six months, with our highest month being 12 GB.

We connect to WiFi when we're home, and try to use WiFi anytime we're doing App or OS updates or steaming video.

One hidden bandwidth-waster is in the Facebook app. Turn off auto-playing of videos.

Don't let grandfathered unlimited data lock you in to something you don't really want or need. I stuck with Sprint for YEARS because I was grandfathered in with unlimited data (which I never used).

Wait till your kids get a little older. Seriously, I sure don't get it though. :)

Thanks for the tip on the Facebook setting, I wouldn't have thought of that one.

$325 per month is $3,900 per year! That is a lot of money. I pay $89.45 a month for phone and internet access and to keep it at that level have to be very judicious with my usage. It bugs me to have to do it but I make extensive use of the computers at my local Library which fortunately is only about a mile from home.

Once they're mature enough to have unsupervised access to the Internet, my kids are welcome to use as much bandwidth as they would like to pay for. :)

We have been grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan for some years, and last 2-year renewal we bought our new Samsung phones (love em) at the Verizon kiosk inside Costco. So they weren't free, but had a chunky rebate. The rep in Costco was able to continue that old plan at the same old price, even though I think we had been told at the Verizon store that it wasn't available.

As for data usage, mine was on the high side. Turned out that for some reason everything was automatically uploading to the Verizon cloud - which I had never activated or even realized, and was a problem when I was on the road. Once I became aware of this, I figured out how to deactivate that. At home and work I make sure to use wi-fi. Since then my data usage is way down and we'll be ready to switch plans as soon as they increase our price.

I live in a small area in Ohio that probably will never have DSL.
We have 9 acres , as my neighbors all have acreage and live on a private drive. The street is about 1500 feet away, but a different county ( we live on the county line divide) So neither county will run cable for the few houses on our street. (no money in it for them)
So Verizon wireless is the only internet connection I have found that works in our area. I need the service to conduct business at home. The phones are not the problem as the kids know I stay on top of there usage. I need it to work as verizon is the only option option I have found to date.

What ticks me off the most about Verizon is stealing the DATA paid for at the end of the cycle mainly overage DATA if you run over. They know you used .2 of the gig charge me for .2 of the gig or add it to your next cycle. Millions of phones per month with the extra $15 gig charge is crazy free money for Verizon.
Right now it is my only option , but I'm always looking as I burn up more gigs !

Have you looked into Hughes Net. I see the ads on TV. It looks like a natural for someone like you. Of course, I have no idea what it costs.

I like doing business in the Costco too because the Verizon store near us is full of a lot of pompous jerks who think they can talk around the real cost of phone and data. We went to Costco years ago for the first time and have tried to visit our Verizon store since, and we keep going back to Costco because we save money doing so.

It's way cheaper than the $300+ he pays now, but satellite can be a challenge. There's a big lag, so it's useless for VOIP, gaming, Telnet/SSH, or a variety of other things. It doesn't work well when the weather is bad. Upload speeds are slow. And compared to other choices (except cellular, especially if you use a lot of bandwidth), it's expensive.

We've been at our current house 14 years (in a fringe rural/suburban area), and uVerse FINALLY became available about a year ago (and to date, it's the only DSL or Cable option for our area). It's such a relief after trying so many different things, none of which worked as fast or reliably as I wanted. I can completely sympathize with Tank.

unlimited

I had unlimited data on Verizon and when I updated my phone I was told that there was "no more unlimited data." I had the family plan on contracts but they did get my overall price down with the $20 per phone line non-contract which includes unlimited texts and calls, $10 iPad, plus shared data plan of your choice. Double the data was cheaper than I had been paying so I took that.

What I hate is not having included international calling and data. Hubby has free international wi-fi calling on T-Mobile and free international data and texting. Verizon's plan is 100 minutes calling and 100 texts plus 100mb of data for $25 I believe. Calling is not so important. I need the cellular data for GPS and travel guides. 100 mb is nothing! Grrrr.

We're in the same boat; can't get high speed internet where we live, even though we can see the WI state capitol building from our street. We live 3/4 of a mile outside city limits. No cable tv only satellite or antenna; no high speed internet except for phone data plan. We are in a little void between three cities, one being Madison. We were late coming to the data plan game because we never needed it before we built our house in the "country".

they say because we have normal service in the area , we can not get it.
I did get dish network and tried the internet service for home. The upload was so slow, I take sports pictures, 300 or so at a event , the system would stall every three or 4 pictures and I'd have to restart it. I don't mind slow, it can take all night to upload just keep going. They ended up taking the system out.

I no longer upload pictures, can't afford it.

I have the unlimited data plan.

After years of being charged up the wazoo to the tune of $100/month for iphone, I decided to strike back.

I split things off to data and phone. I migrated my number to tracfone, and used my original unlimited data plan line as a mifi. i cut my mifi line to the unlimited data plan plus a 30 minute plan. Its $45/month this way. I also got an upgrade on that line and used the best buy method to get a new iphone 6 to use on the tracfone line. And being super cheap, I changed my address and area code on the mifi to Oregon, so I wouldnt have to pay any state tax.

I've been using it as my home internet :)

But I guess they're gonna get me back with the rate increase :(
