I haven't used II before - always used my own resort or did a direct exchange. But this year, I'm considering request first with my platinum Marriott Manor Club. I want to do Cape Cod - or maybe Maine. Not sure.

But II said that if I put in a request, whatever comes up - I have to take. They said they try to call, but if they don't reach you - too bad (they didn't say it like that of course).

I'm nervous about what to do. Manor Club is a 9.5ish place. I'd like a nice place, but don't want to limit to only one or two choices and get nothing. Furthermore, my parents like to come, too. They always rent a timeshare. Well, that's easy with Marriott, but X timeshare in cape cod may have nothing nearby.

Advice? THANKS!

That's not quite right.

If II matches one of your requests, II will confirm an exchange for you - without asking your permission to do so. That's as it should be. If II had to get your permission to confirm an exchange that you requested and you were unavailable for an hour or two, that exchange might well be confirmed to someone else and you could lose out.

However, if you give II an e-mail address to confirm the exchange, you'll be notified immediately. You then have 24 hours from the time of confirmation to contact II and cancel the confirmed exchange without penalty. If you cancel during that 24-hour period, you'll still have your deposited week (same trading strength) and you won't lose your exchange fee.

Call II and talk it over. You have 24 hours to refuse a confirmation (I think) -- but, why would you ask for something you don't really want to do? Just ask for what you're willing to accept and you should be fine. I've found that calling is much better than trying to do requests online.

Okay - so I have to be diligent about checking my email - which I am anyway. THANKS!!! How's retirement?

Ellen,
I'd actually be checking II also to see if the trade happened. It would be real lousy for an email to be delayed/missed/spam folder. II is updated pretty much real time for confirmations.
