Do Valdoro owners get their week AND points?

I've looked at a number of listings for the HGVC Valdoro property and noticed that many seem to advertise that the buyer will get a fixed week PLUS HGVC points.

As first, I assumed that the sellers actually meant they had the usual HGVC deal where you can either use your home resort and unit type for exactly 1 week OR you can use the number of HGVC points assigned to it anywhere in the HGVC system. However, so many sellers claim to have both a week AND points that I'm doubting that assumption.

Were the Valdoro weeks actually sold with both a fixed week and an entitlement to HGVC points? Any idea why?

At Valdoro, a common package to sell was one fixed ski week bundled with one floating platinum season week. If they were buying a 2br, that would be 7000 points for the float week and then a fixed ski week. The owners could release that fixed week for another 7000 points to have 14K points for other HGVC reservations, but seldom do -- the fixed ski week is too valuable to turn in for points.

This is just a case of the owner either not knowing exactly what they own, or using Valdoro-specific terminology in their ad. What they are really selling is 2 weeks, one which happens to be a fixed ski week.

Interesting.

Are the two weeks deeded together so they can't be split? If not, I wonder why the developer and reseller think they are more marketable together rather than separately?

I'm also curious what weeks are included in floating "platinum" season. Is that also ski season?

BTW, I've found that it's usually safe to assume that the seller has no idea what he owns if there's anything at all unusual about it.

The extra 7000 points can be used just like any other HGVC points, so yes you could use them for a second ski week at Valdoro. But here is the very big catch: it is very unlikely that you would find a 2br open for a week during ski season. And even if an owner did turn in their fixed week for HGVC points (creating a open ski week), two more things are against you getting that reservation:

1) It probably wouldn't be done until less than 9 months out, so it would just be sheer luck if you happened to see it, and
2) Tons of other HGVC members would be looking to grab a ski week, and would beat you to it.

I think the reason the weeks were bundled by the sales staff was to sell the less desirable weeks with the ski week (although I wouldn't call a platinum summer week at Valdoro all that "undesirable"). Have you been to Valdoro? It is a beautiful property, 1st class all the way. And there sales staff is quite good -- in fact, we originally signed a contract to buy from the developer there, but thank goodness we found TUG in time and rescinded.

Just my opinions, of course.

I'm still very puzzled by how this works.

Normally, the HGVC points need to relate to an actual deeded week with some kind of usage rights other than HGVC points. Typically, those usage rights would either be to a fixed week, or to a floating week in a particular season.

Are ski and summer seasons both treated as "platinum".

As I understand my ownership at Valdoro, I have a fixed ski week which I have used every year since I purchased it and an additional 7,000. points which can be used to book a 2bdrm in the spring, summer or fall seasons.
We have converted the 7,000. points to Hhonor points for use on international trips. Hope this helps. Kildahl

Yes, at Valdoro Platinum season is ski season and prime summer weeks. They also have some gold, silver, and even bronze weeks (spring mud season) at Valdoro -- just look at the online members guide and it will show the full season grid. I believe only ski weeks are fixed, the rest are floating (just like at Orlando/Vegas/Hawaii).

To be more accurate, those 7000 points could be used at any HGVC property, deposited into RCI, used for HHonors conversion, etc. -- even to book extra ski days at Valdoro in the winter (if there was availability). My point is that those are just regular HGVC points.

Smart Idea!!

For resorts where there are super high demand weeks ( like the ski weeks) and many weeks of low demand ( most of fall). This system of have all owners own multiple weeks ( one a peak demand and one something else) allows the resort to make sure that the low demand weeks don't get abanded.
