Distance to timeshare

Sitting out at camp today, which is a 45 min drive from home wondering how far people r willing to travel for vacation? We did MOW(mrytle beach) last 2 yrs. took approx 18 hours. Doing HHI March 2016 approx 19 hrs. Not atypical for people to travel long distance where we live. Closest MVC is Branson-14 hrs- hoping to go 2017.

The farthest we have gone for a timeshare stay is London - but I know there are timeshares that are farther away than that, like in Asia.

However, even with timeshares within the continental US, I would never drive 18 or 19 hours, if I could fly instead. I won't even drive 6 hours if I can fly instead.

We're about 1200 miles Boston to Hilton Head. We fly if we're staying less than two weeks, drive for longer stays with an overnight stay somewhere in Virginia both ways.

We fly to most timeshares, Rome and Ireland this year! Was so fun! If we travel within Florida we drive. Used to drive to Boston every summer to visit family when kids were small. It depends how much time you have, weather you fly or drive. Then you have to rent a car, so ....

It's 8 hours driving/unlimited flying for us!

Anything over 8 hours (driving time) gets a bit much. that's basically a 12 hour day and that's about the limit of my cage time.

Back when I was in my 50s it was nothing to drive straight through for 24 hours. In my 60 I cut it back by about half. In my early 70s I would stop about every 3rd Rest Stop, lay in the grass with a towel over my head; and take a nap. About age 75 I pretty much quit traveling. Note that most of the time I was traveling alone.

For us it depends on the airline schedules and what we plan to do after arrival. We've driven twice to Ocean Pointe, once in the convertible and once in the pickup. We thought the convertible would be fun but two seat convertibles, even expensive ones, are a little cramped for that distance. When we arrived we realized that Florida is really too hot for a ragtop in the daytime so we drove with the top up and the AC on. The pickup we needed to bring home some stuff we had in storage down there. We fly down now and wouldn't consider driving unless we were visiting folks along the way.

On one trip we stopped in HHI on the way back and it's a beautiful place but a bit too far to drive and from where I live you can't get there from here easily by air. If we ever decide to go there again we'd probably drive but it would definitely be a two day trip.

My son lives in TN about 40 miles from Nashville and SWA used to fly there direct from Islip. They stopped that and now you have to go to Chicago and endure a long layover so we drive now. Another two day trip.

If where I'm going is a direct flight I'll take a plane almost always. If it requires stops and layovers I'll look into driving.

We own a week in Phuket Thailand. Get there about every two years. 9000 miles. In general, approx 26 hours travel time. Shortest was when Thai Air flew a non stop JFK-BKK. That was a 17 hour flight non-stop over the north pole. Then a 45 minute flight to Phuket. 20 hours total. Now we stop in Tokyo or Hong Kong.

I love driving, except in LA or SFO metro areas. Still, Even in traffic, I'm 4.5 hours from Anaheim. If I fly, I take a cab to the airport 30 minutes. Get there 1.5 hours before boarding for security. Wait at least 30 more minutes before take-off. 45 minute flight. 30 minutes to get my baggage and get out of the terminal. We are now at 3 hours 45 minutes travel time. Wait, I don't have transportation. Need to rent a car. 30 more minutes for that. Now that I have a car, I can drive 30 minutes to Anaheim. I've now taken a convenient flight to get to Anaheim, and it only took me 15 minutes longer than just driving, and at greater expense, and I'm in a cheap rental car instead of my personal car with GPS and all my stuff in it.

My general rule is 8 hours. Over that, I'll try to find a flight. But that's just because I really like to drive, and with anything over an 8 hour drive, the flight gives me enough more usable time at my destination.

While it's not nearly so far as Thailand, we bought at the Marriott Maui Ocean Club Napili 6 years ago and we live in central FL. No driving for me! I hate long drives, so even to a closer locale, I would be apt to fly.

We have three kids (one helps drive)so we find driving cheaper and then we have our vehicle. We usually do a reall long day(12-14) and then a shorter day. I wish we lived closer as there are some great deals to be had Monday to Thursday! We count the road trip as part of the vacation. Someday I would like to do some trades into Michigan or Wisconsin for shorter drives.

We plan our trips pretty good and well in advance. If we have a drive more then 10 hours or so we usually book a hotel and then finish the next day. It sort of depends though. Sometimes we stretch a drive out to see things either coming or going with either timeshare or hotels in between. This sometimes means a stay after only about a four hor drive. We like to slow our life's down and enjoy.

It all depends on how much time we have. I LOVE road trips, but we never have enough time off work to enjoy a road trip AND a week or two of vacation somewhere. Flying is a PIA these days, but it's the quickest way to cover long distances. We're looking forward to retirement when we can enjoy s-l-o-w travel. Our first trip will be an extended stay in Europe, bracketed by transatlantic cruises!!!

both of our lng trips to MOW we left on Good friday and came home the following saturday. a long drive for 6 days of bliss! we book a hotel on both ends.

From North Carolina, we'll drive to anywhere in NC, SC, Georgia, or Florida - 8-10 hours or so max. The I-95 corridor is an easy drive and I've traveled that road so much on business and vacations I can nail the exact ETA at certain landmarks/exits within a couple minutes as long as there are no traffic jams.

Going north, we have driven as far as DC (about 6 or 7 hours), but anything farther north than that and we would probably fly just to avoid driving in the Philadelphia-New York-Boston corridor.

Not many timeshares we would want to visit to our west in drivable distances, so trips west-bound will all be by plane. Since Charlotte is American Airlines' second largest hub, we have nonstop flights to most any city of any size. The farthest timeshare trips we've ever taken are to California, many trips to Hawaii, and last year my wife and daughter went to the Marriott Vacation Club near Paris, France.

we go to myrtle beach or hilton head 2-3 times a year from our home in surburban new york. I would never consider flying esp if 3-4 prople are going. I would much rather make the 11-13 hour drive. We used to drive straight thru to south florida also but now I consider that a 2 day drive. I only consider flying when we are going west of the Mississippi or when I can't drive.

I fly to most places. Of course, being based in DFW, Texas, puts one a long ways from most big name timeshares.

For example, DFW to Orlando is around 24 hours driving, 2 1/2 hours fight time. The west coast is the same.

I can take 3-4 hours in a sardine can better than 24+ hours on the road...

(Besides, renting cars lets you do a long test drive...

That's a pretty long distance to do 2-3 times a year! Someday when my work schedule is less hectic I would think about doing long drives a few times a year. We actually enjoy driving but would prefer to only do a 8-10 hr day.

the way airline travel is today I would much rather sacrifice a vacation day on the road then put myself thru dealing with all the hassles associated with flying.

To those who live only 2-3 hrs from TS's do you use them alot for 3-4 day vacations?

We are about 3-4 hours from Hilton Head, so we plan to do a lot of 3-4 day vacations in the future there. Can't really take full advantage of that option until our youngest heads off to college in 2017, but then I could see us doing several 3-4 day trips to HHI every year. That's why Marriott DC Points was so appealing to us. Can't do that with weeks.
