Those of us that patronize Disney, Toys R Us, New York Life may want to think twice.

Not just IT anymore. Most skills at this point can be shipped overseas in a flash. I am thankful that China does not teach English like the Brits did in India. The fact that most well educated South Asians learn to speak fluent English makes these skills so portable.

My point is that Disney, New York Life, Toys R Us should be held accountable for this type of behavior. Add TimeInc to this !@#% list as well. NYT will not report on TimeInc out of respect since TimeInc is a journalistic organization. But I just wanted my TUG friends to be aware of what these household names are doing with our children's future here in the US.

If you don't know TimeInc is the parent company of TIME, FORTUNE and a long list of other media brands. Just remember LIFE magazine, TIME&LIFE . Its a sad ending to an iconic journalistic brand.

Yep. Disney has done this several times. They tell the US workers that they have to train the Indian replacements or they won't get their severance pay. Nothing new for them, but hopefully they will get reamed at some point.

Oh and another thing! Does anyone ever wonder if these folks offshore that handle our personal data have the training, and awareness of the sensitivity of our personal information? SS#, DOB, address, CC number, bank info. The fact that full datasets are handled by foreign entities is a factor in many of these data breaches.

But yet American consumers constantly want lower prices for everything. Those companies that don't reduce their costs do not last long.

Consumers need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask if they would pay more for the same product from an "ethical" company vs. looking for the lowest price. Personally I don't put all of the blame on the companies; they are mostly just trying to stay competitive.

One problem is most of the companies Americans work for here in the USA have kept our salaries so low that we can't always afford to pay more for the USA products.

I try to, but, for example, for me to pay like $200 for a bathrobe when I can get one at Walmart for $30 would be crazy based on our household income.

The whole thing is a set up.

Baloney.. yes we look for the best price, but we don't set the prices. Off shoring is a conscience decision on the part of the supplier to provide a better price and undercut competitors. If we need something, we are going to pay the prevailing rate, regardless of price.

If only it were that simple. While I agree in principle with your statement it gets complicated. In New York Life's example Senior Management is getting desperate due to years of the current low interest rate environment. As a Life Insurance Company they must maintain a size able reserve in long term corporate bonds. I am in no way defending their decision. It is just that NYL will not be offering a product at a cheaper price to the public. They are looking to shore up their reserves by way of cheap labor outside of the US.

...and Economics will tell you that to stay competitive, a company must source for the lower input cost, i.e., typically labor or/and minerals. This is not trying to get political but by raising minimum wage in the US, the problem of outsourcing will get worse, not better.

There's no easy solution for this in a global economy.

Our agriculture is so large and efficient that it frequently puts farmers out of business in many, many third world countries. When those countries impose tariffs on U.S. agriculture, prices rise and the people complain.

Here, the issue is that our labor is expensive, while the labor in developing countries is not. We could impose tariffs or take other steps to undercut cheap labor, but the result would be a rapid rise in prices in the U.S.

Guess what? People would complain.

It is no setup, it is Economics. We may feel that our salaries are low in the US but they are higher than many parts of the world. As consumers we want to pay for value. Value = price for the quality. If quality is similar between 2 products we will pay whichever is lower.

Yes, companies set the prices but they don't set their prices in a vacuum unless they are a monopoly. The "prevailing rate" is set by the market, not a company, so it is outside of the company's control.

Take this simple example: Company A produces a product from a US factory that costs $8 to make, and they sell it for $10.

Then Company B comes along and produces the exact same product overseas (maybe the company is even based overseas). It costs company B $5 to make the product, and they sell it for $7.

What is Company A to do? They can't simply lower their price to $7 because it costs them (with a US factory) $8 to make. No one is going to pay $10 for their product when they can buy it for $7. So Company A makes a conscious decision to outsource their manufacturing. It is either that or go out of business. In either case, the manufacturing jobs in the US are gone -- there is nothing that would change that outcome.

Make Company A American Apparel and Company B say H&M and you have a chapter 11.

Pretty soon that will be going overseas too.
What's to stop our medical tests being sent overseas to be read?
Especially radiology. Maybe it's already being done.

Guess the pharmaceuticals have a monopoly to a point in the US because I read prescription drugs can be had for less $ in Canada, Mexico etc.

It's not always about quality of a product but merely appearance of being the same. One example I have a name brand t-shirt from vacation and after a year it had tiny holes showing in the fabric:(........ then I have other older t-shirts from other vacation locations with 0 holes in the material. Cheaper does not = same quality, but just by looking at them to buy who knew?
