I ran across what I think is a good deal for the upcoming tax year. The software only cost me $38.99 and there was no CA sales tax. This is by far the cheapest price I have found for the software (both Federal plus one state return). Here is a link to their site if you are interested in checking it out for yourself. I don’t know how long their sale is going to be going on, but their regular price is $49.95.

If that link doesn’t work, I found the deal via a nextag.com search.

Once you pay for the software, they send you an email in an hour or two where you can go download your software. It is a large file download (~122MB) and it took me about 12 minutes to download using a DSL connection. I only ran into one problem with the download and installation. When I downloaded the file, the download forgot to include the “ .zip ” file extension. So I had to add the extension to the file manually using Windows Explorer. After that, I unzipped the file to a temporary folder on my hard disk and installed the software from there. The installation was as simple as downloading it from Intuit and it went perfectly.

The TurboTax offer for $38.99 includes the federal e-file but not the state, that will cost an additional $19.95. The home and business version for $13.99 is for 2010, not 2011.

TaxAct is currently offering their ultimate online version for $13.95 and it includes both the Federal and State e-file

Turbo Tax has never traditionally offered a state efile. It includes one state download so you can prepare a state return, but you either have to mail it or pay the efile fee.

I used Nextag to find NowDeals. Yes, the software I downloaded was for 2011. The link I provided will take you right to the appropriate ad.

I agree that online versions are less expensive. Actually, I could have gotten the online version of Turbo Tax free from one of my brokerage houses. But I don't trust any website well enough to give them that much of my personal data. All it would take is for one hacker to get into the website and then you are set up for identity theft. I would much rather keep all that personal information on my hard drive where it is safe. Besides, my girlfriend and her 2 daughters also use the software to file their tax returns. It is good for up to 5 tax returns.

I'm with Zinger. I have been using Tax Act for the past several years for $13.95 for Fed & State with e-filing. While you can do other taxes (as Paul points out) I don't believe you can free efile them. In Arizona you can print the TaxAct forms and transfer the information to the online State e-file for free! :)

the version I buy lets you efile 5 federal returns free, and one state. the other state returns are expensive.
