English as the official language was one of the biggest draws for DH to investigate Belize as a winter stay destination. We are in the northern part (12 miles from the MX border) so there is a lot of Spanish spoken here but we understand that is different in the central and southern part of the country.

My BIL and his spouse are moving to Belize this summer. She's going to be running a new resort there on Ambergris Caye. We asked about schooling and it's all in English. Elementary they have a school reasonably close. Once they get to middle school they'll have to take a plane to school every day!

In fact, up until 1973, it was called British Honduras.
