We have a 1 BR coming up at DSVII - a comp from MVCI to make up for "issues" we encountered last year. We don't own there; Marriott deposited the week to II and this is what we selected. So mgt probably sees this as an Marriott owner-II exchange.

Two questions:
1. I was very surprised and disappointed to learn that there is a hefty daily fee to use the JW pool and fitness facility. Is this new? Is there any way around it? We don't have that at CV or LR, but we are owners there. We are Chairman's Club, and MR Platinum Elites, in case that helps.

2. Location recommendations - we don't have to be right by the pool, and prefer quiet (no kids or grandkids joining us) Are any buildings in better shape than others? Is there construction going on? Etc. Advice welcome!!

Only owners and guests as DSV I get "free" access to the JW pool, spa and fitness facilities. I say "free" because it really isn't free. Owners pay a hefty fee in their maintenance fees.

Try Jasmine Court

We were at DSV II recently and stayed on Jasmine Court. The area was quiet and the villas looked brand new. There is a pool right there to use, so felt no need to leave the area. On an earlier trip, we had used the hotel pool and would not pay to do that. Before we left, I called and was told that all the villas on Jasmine Ct. had been recently refurbished. I don't know about the other areas of the resort, but you can call to make sure. Enjoy your trip.

I liked Jasmine Court for a more quiet, less hurried feel.

Is Jasmine Court a separate II code from DSVII?

No, but when DSVII emails you for preferences, you can put in there that you want Jasmine Court. Jasmine Court has a separate gated entrance, but I believe you still go to the main gate for check in.

I just returned and forget the name of the unit we stayed in but it overlooked a small island that was basically the green for one of the golf course holes. We spent a lot of time on the porch and in the dining room reading and relaxing while watching golfers make their offerings to the water gods. It never got old! Perhaps someone more familiar with the location can fill in the details.

While we ate at a variety of really terrific restaurants, I would especially recommend one evening at The Purple Room.

www.purpleroompalmsprings.com.

They have terrific no-cover entertainment during the week and if you get there a bit early, you can sit close to the stage and really enjoy the act. We were there on a Tuesday, a pianist with a very entertaining jazz/standards singer. A lot of fun and reasonably priced food.

Dgf, I know exactly where that is as I've offered quite a few golf balls there myself. It is a very hard hole for most of the duffer golfers like me who play the course. I'm sure it was quite amusing to watch.

The Purple Room sounds like a terrific recommendation for Palm Springs. What a great place to dine and have entertainment. It reminds me of the Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, if you've ever been there. I will definitely put it on my list to try next time we are out there. Haven't been there. In over 2 years and we miss this great escort that we own at DSV II (and understand they just got a new GM for the properties).
Thanks,
Brian

If you like to walk around the resort I wouldn't stay in Jasmine Court. It is isolated from the rest of the resort and a long walk over to the remainder of the resort. Also not as convenient if you decide you want to use any of the main pools. Yes they have a shuttle that will take you there if you get on the shuttle schedule. Look at a google map of the resort and you can see what I am talking about. There is no short-cut path through the golf course.

Also DSV I has free access to the JW pools, spa, etc. only on M-F. Not on the weekends.

My issue with the 2 golf courses at the DSV location is that they are very beat up. Level of difficulty is about average. The golf course at Westin Desert Willow is in much better condition. We normally split our March / April stay each year between DSV and Westin - this year we will be doing at Wesrin Mission Hills after DSV week. We get to sample each course each time we stay at Palm Desert area.

Actually, both Desert Springs courses are in good shape this year, I play there often. They have beautiful views of the mountains. I agree that Desert Willow courses are a better challenge (there are two of them). The bigger issue to me is play can be slow at Desert Springs, its a resort course so there a no rangers pushing play along. They do have player assistants who will frequently give you an apple or banana to eat while you wait to hit you next shot.

Once of the best courses in the valley is the Faldo course at Shadow Ridge, and a new favorite is the Greg Norman course at PGA West.

Have a good trip.
