When they start asking for volunteers, do you become one or take your chances that you are one of the ones that gets bumped? What are the chances you get bumped from a flight. If there are 200 seats and 25 of those fliers have elite status, then you have a 1 in 175 chance of getting bumped. Or you have a much higher chance of getting less compensation by becoming a volunteer.

I think in cases other overbooking there should only be volunteers. Everyone has a price points. No one should get selected when its possible they are going to start a timeshare vacation, funeral, birth, job interview, just trying to get home extra. Until that is the law government regulations are failing us. In cases when the whole plane is delayed then it is different and adequate accomodations should be made for everyone affected.

Back when I used to travel a lot, I had a standard threshold, anything over 500 bucks and I was usually game (sometimes got as high as 800), especially on my Friday flights home. I would usually schedule my flights to increase chances of it happening and on occasion gotten paid twice on same day (rebooked flight overbooked ). There is a whole science to this.. there are even people who buy fully refundable tickets for the busiest flying days of the year to play this game 3 to 5 times in same day. .
