Delta - Would you book for Christmas?

I'd like to book flights on Delta for Christmas, but am worried that we have no idea what will be happening with Delta by then. Would you book? Would those of you with more experience know what might happen to our tickets if they go under? Would another airline honor them? I suppose there's really no way to know this until it happens (and let's hope it never happens)

There are lots of theories about the airline business. One is that the airlines that have been through bankruptcy and shed major expense items like pension plans will be at a competitive advantage over those that haven't, if they can just get through the rough spot. DL and NW got in under the wire to take advantage of the old bankruptcy law. US and UA had already taken advantage of that. That leaves CO and AA, which have not gone through this round of bankruptcy.

If DL can get through this pilots issue in the next few weeks, I suspect it will be around in December.

Personally, I'd be more than a little concerned about a pilots strike with Delta. If that happens, then all is lost IMO. As I understand it, if you book on an airline that is in bankruptcy, certain protections offered by travel insurance or credit cards may be lost. You could be relegated to flying on a "space available" basis (standby) on other airlines and paying a small fee for the privledge. Sitting in an airport over the holiday's isn't my idea of a lot of fun. I'd be less than willing to take that chance.

IMO, it's better to spend a couple extra bucks on an airline your reasonably sure will be flying over the holiday's. But, that just my opinion and it's colored by being stuck more than once whlie traveling.

I have ff tickets on Delta for December, going to Cancun. I thought I would take a chance. If for some reason it doesn't work out, I will try to find another carrier and purchase tickets.

Price went up within a week

For a Christmas booking, at 331 days out, I checked to book to Seattle, our common trip to visit my ill mother.

It weas a GREAT price but I didn't book it then. A week later, the tickets went up $100.

Don;t know why it should be that much of a change, but it was.
