I think this is a pretty simple calculus: will taking a hard line on requiring masks help more people feel comfortable flying, and do they more than make up for those it turns away? It seems that we know what Delta thinks the answer might be.

The Orlando Sentinel had an article about this quoting the president of Visit Orlando saying something very similar.

Edited to add: I suspect this is what is behind Walmart, Target, Best Buy etc.'s decisions to require them nationwide too. If people don't feel safe shopping somewhere, they are not going to go.

Delta's CEO has said they will keep middle seats in coach empty thru mid-September.
As a Delta flyer, I want to say kudos to Delta for being serious about it (unlike others).

I like Delta's new requirement as well. I have seen too many people (mostly on social media platforms) proclaim they can't wear masks because they have asthma. Of course, no proof is needed to say that, so I strongly suspect many are just saying it because they oppose wearing one. My wife and daughter both have asthma, and they have no problems with masks.

I got "shouted down" in one Facebook conversation where I suggested that if a typical face mask feels constricting, perhaps wear a bandanna draped down from the nose or a face shield -- at least they both provide some level of safety for others around them. Just proved to me that they didn't want to be challenged by their unverified proclamation that they had "medical reasons" for not wearing a mask. With Delta's new requirements, it seems those people would be weeded out before boarding a plane -- bravo for them.

I can only speak personally as a retired senior who has remained relatively isolated for the last 4 months. I also don't expect that to change significantly between now and December, or even longer, especially since no vaccine is expected to be widely available by then.

We look at the re-explosion in cases in the USA and the inconsistent use or enforcement of masks, hand washing and physical distancing. If that doesn't change, at least in the areas we would be visiting or travelling through, then we will feel very uncomfortable coming south this fall or winter. Our next trip is to HGVC Plantation Beach Club on Hutchinson Island in Florida in December. The potential danger is not in being there so much, as in the getting there. Once there we can stay somewhat isolated, just as we are when at home.

While we can at least avoid the additional issues of flying, we still must drive down the I79/I77/I95 corridor to get there. Every time we have to stop to use a public washroom, get food, or stay somewhere overnight, is a new potential risk. This is particularly so if locals are not staying safe themselves or following proper medical guidelines.

It is up to each state and community to make the decisions that it feels are best for it, but then we have to make the final decision on what is right for us. At the moment I would assign at most a 10% probability that we will keep the booking. Let's hope that changes, but I am not optimistic. I suspect even our January trip to St. Martin is not likely. If so, it will be our first time in decades without any travelling for over a year, but safety comes first.

I have asthma and have no issues with masks. I even had no trouble when I ended up in Urgent care because I couldn't breathe well (pulse ox was 89%).
However mask anxiety is real and needs to be addressed and shown how to be overcome vs just the stupid social shaming that goes on. I suspect it's not the "breathing" that is the issue but the claustrophobic feeling from instinctively not wanting something on our faces. Empathy and trying to find out what is really the bother can go along way to helping. IIRC I think John Campbell addressed this in one of his updates on youtube a week or so ago-had someone on who discussed this and went through the technique to feel comfortable without the "smothering" feeling.

If governor's/mayors/public health officials really want to help get citizens compliant they'd do better to have people like that on daily vs the shaming and snitch lines

Wise words, @CanuckTravlr. Here in virus-stricken California - where we thought we were doing so well not very long ago - we see during the winter months in normal times a lot of Canadians, and they are very welcome here and encouraged to visit. But not now, and not until we get this under control. Stay safe, keep the border closed, and stay away for the foreseeable future.

We are scheduled to fly Delta from Florida to Utah in December.
Delta is doing well for now, but we'll wait+see what December brings.
Utah is not currently a hot spot, but we'll load up on Lysol spray+wipes.
