Dear reCAPTCHA,
Every time you ask me to select pictures of cars, traffic lights, etc when I google something, including searching "reCAPTCHA", I am going to close Chrome and search on Firefox with another search engine.
Deal?

I never get prompted for reCAPTCHA when just searching on Google through Chrome.

How many searches are you doing per minute?

One too many apparently but there are other search engines I can use, no problem.

By the way, the computer seems to use a lot less energy (if I judge by the noise of the fan) if I use Firefox vs Chrome. I think Edge is also more energy efficient.

They need to use photos where the object is readily apparent.
Using ones where it's obscured or just a small part on the edge is unfair.

Drives me crazy and I’m using Safari and logging in to a real estate site. Every fourth house I click on to look at, I get it. GRRRR!

I have been using Firefox more and have searched mainly with duckduckgo , my default search engine right now. I also disabled 3rd party cookies. I have had very few issues with recaptcha in the last few days. A side benefit, the laptop battery runs almost twice longer , I cannot believe the difference. I guess a lot of things were happening in the background and the CPU and the fan were working extra. There are 1 billion Chrome users according to Google, I can only imagine at the scale of the planet how much more energy is being wasted with that browser. Not very green.

I have never observed an increase in energy / fan usage with Chrome on my laptop. I wonder if you might have some sort of browser extension installed that is triggering the captcha and increased CPU usage?

Sounds like you have a work around, but if would like to use chrome again, you might want to remove some of the extensions or even remove and reinstall Chrome on your laptop.

In Chrome I only have an ad blocker, no other extention. I use Chrome sometimes now but I mostly use Firefox. Both with the third-party cookies blocked. It seems that most of the activity in the background is generated by those. Try the same, I am curious if others would experience the same.

And just to show how invasive and energy consuming cookies are, this is the message from Firefox with all the cookies and content blocked when I visit gohawaii.com. To be clear, I am not signed in nor do I have open tabs with youtube ,pinterest, facebook or youtube-nocookie (isn't that ironic?). I see youtube and facebook cookies blocked all the time even if the sites have nothing to do with them, they are probably the most common. In any case, it works for me, my laptop lasts twice a much on battery now.

The only use of Captcha that I find annoying is on HGVC's owner's website.
As if someone is gonna impersonate a TS owner and mess with their bookings
... or pay their MF's?
Yeah, someone might want revenge, but I doubt they'd bother with a TS site.

My cable company billing account requires two factor authentication with a text message every single log in. This is just the billing login, which is separate from the one used to watch shows online.

The only thing you can do with it is pay the bill. I say anyone who wants to pay my cable bill is welcome to have at it.

Often from the account management page not only can you pay the bill, but add or drop services. I think the company is trying to make sure the person logging is authorized and helps avoid complaints about "who added showtime" or "who signed up for the faster internet"..
