Dc points affect on II

I was at Canyon Villas last 2 weeks, and the front desk guy said that they are now seeing a lot of 1 and 2 night stays going empty in the villas. If marriott holds back the more desirable deposits into II and a points owner books 1 or 2 nights of a week, that week never gets put into II. I can turn a week into points, take my 8 reservations for the year, and book an extra weeknight for each one with points to get cheaper air, and with one week I have removed 8 weeks from II forever. This could be a huge problem over time?

Breakage exists in any system. In II, it is weeks that go unused. In DC it is days that go unused. So any time a DC owner books one night it breaks a week. Any time a DC owner books seven nights that start on a non traditional checkin day, there are two broken weeks.

I would hope that Marriott can work out some way to give this broken inventory to II for ShortStay exchanges. Bodies in the room are good for owners and the resorts, no matter how they got there.

Not trying to highjack this thread but, the one week turned in for points to book one night to get cheaper airfare got my attention. Is it really cheaper to pay the MF's on that week and turn it into points to get the cheaper airfare? Would you really save enough money on airfare to come out ahead if you deduct the cost of that weeks MF's?

I get your point that there is potential to break up weeks and remove them from Interval's exchange pool but, I don't think there is sufficient savings that a large enough number of owners will see value in this ideology. At least not to the point it will have any significant affect on Interval's inventory.

We are presenting a similar situation by currently looking at booking Thursday check in dates, which is not a check in day offered by the majority of Marriott resorts. I'm wondering how that's going to affect Interval inventory as it may have the affect of breaking up two weeks at resorts who don't have the Thursday check in option. I suspect the inmapct will be minimal.

Still, there are enough options with DC points that, given enough owners book short stays or odd check in days that it could cause inventory within Interval's weeks exchange program to drop slightly. It all depends on how many legacy weeks owners join the DC and, more importantly, how many that have joined exchange their weeks for points. I'm still thinking this will be a small enough of a percentage that we won't see any significant impact on Interval's inventory for a number of years, if we ever see any real impact at all.

I think the OP is talking about converting to DC points to make a reservation starting on a non traditional checkin date to save on airfare. Not convert to MRPs to use those to buy airfare.

Yes, I am talking about DC points. I know of a number of people who turn in a week for points and book 2 5 night stays sun-thurs. That week just took 2 weeks out of II, and its a great use of points. I, like most have killed II by splitting my lockoffs and getting 6 xyz weeks, Points cant touch that, I am just coming to the conclusion that inventory in Hawaii is going to get scarce over the next few years. With a family of 4, I can save easily $400 each trip to hawaii by changing even one flight date to a midweek. If I can do that twice a year by turning in one of my weeks, that looks pretty good to me, Plus I really like 10 days in Hawaii instead of 7. This all takes weeks out of II, and I cant be alone :)

I have been doing this anyway over the last 7 years by just exchanging for 2 consecutive weeks and not using all 14 nights. Of course it has been way cheaper than the new dc points system, I just think that I will not be able to do this in the future.
