TUGgers,

I'm staying at Cypress Harbour (well, my family is -- I'm working) in a few weeks for several days at Walt Disney World -- continuing to a Disney cruise departing on April 7th (I do get to go on the cruise).

Has anyone done this? I'm trying to figure out transportation. I'm assuming we have to rent a car for transport to/from Cypress Harbour and Walt Disney World. But I'm trying to figure out the transportation to the cruise ship?

Please advise -- any collective knowledge would be appreciated.

Thanks!

We plan on doing something similiar in August (minus the Disney part). We are staying at Lakeshore Reserve, flying into MCO.
Our plan is to rent a car at MCO to use, return it to MCO at the end of this part, then use aceluxury.com or another car service to get to the port.
We thought about driving over to the port in the rental, but we have other people staying with us as well as my parents flying in the morning of the cruise, so it makes sense to share the aceluxury.com fare and return the car at the airport.
Hope this helps

Greg,

You have a couple of options. We have done something similar, just not Cypress Harbour. As the PP indicated, you can rent a car at MCO and return it to MCO and then take transportation from MCO to Port Canaveral. You can either book something privately or book something through the cruise line. Another option is to try and get a good rate through Budget and pick up at MCO and drop at Port Canaveral. Budget has a shuttle from their rental car location to the port. We have done this once and plan to do it again in November when we sail on the Carnival Dream. I think National may also have a location and shuttle in Port Canaveral.

For the return to MCO, you may also find it cheaper to rent through Budget and pick up at Port Canaveral and drop at MCO. If you are looking for the convenience factor you can also just book transportation directly from the port privately or through the cruise line.

I have never found a drop charge for this type of rental, as on ship days they are trying to move cars and also want to compete against the bus transportation that is offered by the cruise lines.

Yes, the most economical way is to book a car rental with a drop off at Port Canaveral. Avis also does it. We have done it several times, pretty easy. There was a day that I knew the port location codes by heart, those brain cells are gone.

The next most reasonable way is the most convenient, you can get a private town car/van/limo depending upon how many are in your party. I'd try to get a rental car drop by Cypress Harbor so you don't have to take the car all the way back to the airport. You can get a grocery/liquor stop on the way, if you are the type to bring your own booze on board.

If there are more than 3 of you I think the most expensive way would be to take the Disney bus, but maybe that has changed.

you can check the disboards cruise boards for the current favorite limo company, cruise groups, fish mail, etc

DOTS or MEARS shuttle?

Hello GregT,

You may want to think about using DOTS, Daytona Orlando Transportation Shuttle. I have not used them personally, however I have heard good things from other people about them. There is also another service called DOShuttle. These are mainly focused towards the I-4 corridor, but they also make trips to transfer from MCO (Orlando International) to Port Canaveral, a common route.

Alternately, you could call Mears transportation and request a quote. I believe they run a shuttle service as well.

If you are really cheap, or desperate, you can also roll the dice and try to get a ride from the Sun Cruz casino shuttle for free :). They have various stops around Orlando, and make the trip several times a day. Yes, I know people who have done this. No, I am not one of them. Mainly broke college kids going to the beach. This may not be practical if you have a lot of luggage, and I know it is a bit frowned upon, but hey nothing in Orlando surprises me any more.

I used Avis too - except I am really cheap and get it at the 8700 S Orange Blossom Trail location - the tax/fees is significantly cheaper than getting it at the airport.

I think using the corp rate a minivan was $36

Thanks all for the excellent suggestions!!

I'm feeling good about a rental car for the WDW part and then using aceluxury for the trip to the cruise ship. I'll report back on how well this works.

Thanks again! (and Puck, looking forward to steak and ice!!)

Best,

Greg
