I know everyone says to rely on public transportation while at Custom House in Boston. But we will be there Thanksgiving week. We have reservations at Plimoth Plantation (Rock) for our Thanksgiving meal. Afraid public transportation will be spotty, at best, on a holiday.

Where could I pick up a car near Custom House for a day?

Plymouth, MA is about 40 miles south of Boston and you definitely require a car on Thanksgiving Day to get there for dinner. Even if you could get close via commuter rail (MBCR), it would be on a holiday schedule, very infrequent service.
Are you flying into Logan Airport? I would rent a vehicle from there.
Alternative is reserve at a neighborhood location such as those offered by Enterprise or Hertz (HLE).
Also, do not use the hotel valet service if you rent a vehicle for a couple of days. There are plenty of parking garages with discounted nightly and wknd. rates nearby. Use parking facility at the Langham Hotel on Franklin St., about two blocks away. Around $10.00 a day, Sat./Sun.
Marriott Custom House is nice. Limited amenities, as all 1 BD units, but an ideal location for visiting Boston.

When we stayed there, I requested a high floor as you will likely hear some street noise due to its proximity to Fanueil Hall and waterfront area bars. That will be a busy weekend too. Have a great trip....

Try www.zipcar.com

They have a bunch of cars about a block away from the Custom House, and you can grab a car anytime you want. You rent these cars by the hour, but you must be registered in advance and use their pass card to gain access to their vehicles.

The nice thing about zipcar is you can walk to it from the Custom House and you can take one anytime you want, and you get to choose whatever car that is available.

.

There is a parking garage about 2 blocks from the Custom House and on the bottom floor there is an Alamo/National car rental agency, 270 Atlantic Ave.

When you check in at the Custom House request an upper floor opposite of the Black Rose and Sissy K's taverns. They are quite loud until about 3 in the morning. We just returned and had a room on the 23rd. floor and it was very nice. Only 2 rooms on that floor.

I have not lived in Boston fo many years ( graduate school at BU - and was a native years before that) but have you considered taking a BOAT to Plymouth? I have no idea what is running, prices, etc. - but I know they exist. T-Day Not so sure. You are already near water - I would at least look at the possibility.

If you are driving down, and are stuck in traffic where the highway goes form 4 lanes to 2 - you are near my hometown of Weymouth.

neat

The boat is a neat idea. Will start looking into that.

Looks like a Zipcar is not an option. There is an $85 fee to join plus the cost of the rental (approx $70 for the time we would need on Thanksgiving Day).

Custom House recommends Enterprise. Hertz location is 2-miles away. Will check into Alamo/National.

Yes, reserve a car for a day or two for T-Day.

I am not familiar with a Plymouth-Boston water shuttle, but am not saying that there isn't one. There is a Hull and a Hingham water shuttle.

Make sure that you allow a lot of time to get to old Plimoth as there's usually a parade and sometimes a peaceful protest in town by the Native American "National Day of Mourning".

Also, traffic on the S.E. Distressway and Rte. 3 South will probably be heavy. Hope the weather is good for you. Do add another hour and half to be safe ( I would and I know the area ).

great!

Wow-- did not know about the parade. Our kids will love that.
Looks like we may need a car twice during our week.

We just returned from the Custom House. The concierge (Ellen) arranged a rental car for us through Enterprise. Enterprise dropped it off at the Custom House. We rented it for 2 days and Enterprise provided a voucher for parking at a nearby (10 minute walk) garage. The cost of the car was very reasonable, especially considering the daily parking charge at Custom House is $39/day ($29/day for owners). We dropped it off at the garage the 2nd night. Very easy.

Same as Toppermom, Ellen secured us a car from Enterprise. They delivered it early am (7:00 AM) and two days later came and picked-it up (before 6:00 PM). Could not have been easier.

I was quite surprised with the very late night noise from the street below. If I go back to the Custom House, I will ask for a bedroom away from the State Street side (which are few, I know).

Good mention Old Hickory.

Yes, the street noise is a drawback from being so centrally located in a major urban setting. Being right in the midst of things is great until you try to get some sleep. The CH is surrounded by bars, restaurants (Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market) and a major auto thoroughfare through Bahstun.

I wonder if the front desk could provide fans or other type of white noise machines ?

I've been there on New Year's Eve/Night (thanks, PatGrayFal) and slept fairly well after the bars closed (and the 3 flutes of Tatts !), but of course, that night was to be expected.

Am returning this New Year's eve thanks to DeniseM.

We were there in June and there was some sort of street concert on the side opposite the Black Rose and right under our window. It was so loud that even with all the windows closed it was much louder than the television. Went on WAY too late for my taste.
