Cruise Line Raises Gratuities in 2020

Are these rates mandatory or just "suggestions"?

But of course, like everything else in life, prices go up.

if rice goes up, gratuity goes up, but if they raise percentage, goes up more

We don't ever gripe about "mandated" gratuities. Besides the standard gratuities, we give an additional 5% of our cruise fare to our favorite service people on the cruise. The folks work hard and most of non-officer staff come from less developed countries and they do everything within their means to make it fantastic experience for the passengers.

Not to imply the staff do not earn thier tips. But this is as bad a intrusion to your wallet as the resort fees. Hidden/additional costs to what is advertised. I'd prefere on making a purchase decision based on the FULL advertised price, not a low ball meaningless numbers that extra costs are heaped upon. WHy not stop this madness, pay the employees what they deserve. Include this in the cost of a ticket. After all YOU pay this amount anyway, just a matter of being honest and upfront.

You need to sail Virgin, apparently this is how they will operate. No additional gratuities.

Also, just because gratuities are going up, it doesn't mean those people working for you on the ship are getting a raise, the cruise line may just be spreading the gratuity out among more employees.

“gratuities are shared by our exceptional onboard dining and culinary services team, stateroom attendants, other housekeeping services personnel, as well as staff from other departments who work behind the scenes to enhance your cruise experience.”

I always tip more than the standard unless I don't have any direct interaction with the person getting the tip. If I never see/talk to them, they get the standard. I don't know about other lines, but on Disney, the tipped positions basically only make tips. They tend to go over and above anything I'd ever want/need. I try to be as low maintenance as possible, but they still manage to do extra stuff for me. I just consider tipping part of the cost of the vacation.

They're pretty much mandatory. They WILL be automatically charged to your account every day. They SAY you can contest or edit the amount charged. I've never done it, and almost always book with 'prepaid gratuities'. Even as it is, compared with the 'old standard' way of tipping on cruised where passengers were expected to stuff cash into a stack of envelopes, then at the end of the cruise, to place the envelope into the waiting hands of the cabin steward, waiter, Maitre'd, bartender, wine steward, and on and on.

Some cruise lines still use the old model, and it is more personal, though (imo) a PITA.
