I used to own a mid August Crown Suite Fixed Week at Monarch (HHI). I bought it for $25K some time in the early 90s and sold it for $41K sometime between 2000 and 2002. There is currently a mid September Crown Suite Fixed Week for sale on Ebay for $1. Granted that the MF is over $2K, but give me a break. Can things get worse than this?

Interesting..... I didn't know that a 3-BR unit existed there.

Wonder why the 3-BR MF is so high, compared to normal 2-BR MF (which are high enough!) ???

I am also curious about this myself.

Granted it has an additional bedroom, appears to be 1600 sf instead of 1200 sf for the 2BR, and has its own hot tub on the deck; but that's one heck of an difference in MF.

While this doesn't effect MFs, there is only one 3BR unit there, it is ocean front.

The Crown Suite is a fabulous unit. Three bedrooms (master bedroom is a giant with tropical rainwater shower); hugh dining room; lots of other amenities; oceanfront deck with hot tub covers almost the entire top floor of the building. IMO worth every penny of $2,000+ MF. For $1, a great buy!!

Having stayed in this unit in January, if it was any other time of the year . . . I would jump at the opportunity. I could live in this unit and never return home :) . . not sure I would enjoy paying the maintenance fees. Does Marriott have first right of refusal for Monarch?

No ROFR at Monarch.

Flyerbobcat . . . this was Marriott's very first timeshare endeavor . . . it was an existing building that Marriott purchased and turned into Marriott Timeshare #1 . . . and the rest is history as they say!

Monarch was owned by American Resorts, which Marriott aquired to start their Vacation Club business.

Monarch was owned by American Resorts, which Marriott aquired to start their Vacation Club business.

Monarch is an interesting resort and has interesting history. Bob Miller who originally came from American Resorts is part of the executive leadership team in the new SpinCo (Marriott Vacations Worldwide).

There are 6150 unit-weeks but only around 5000 owners because a fair number (~17%) of owners are multiple week owners there. Out of the 122 villas, 15 are floating week villas, all others are fixed week.

The MF in the Crown Suite are double since it is counted as 2 villas, not 1.

My only issue is the season - if it was more within the summer season where most schools are out I think the week for sale would be a lot more attractive.

So, was a Tugger the winning bidder?

If so; I thank you. You probably saved me from myself. The winning bidder outbid my snipe. I just couldn't help myself. I would have been giddy with excitement if I had won, but was not disappointed when I did not win.

Congratulations to the winning bidder. Sounds like a fantastic unit.

I was in it at $1500 but didn't want to go any higher so I let it go.

Very Excited!

Hello Everyone,

First time Tugger, long time reader. I was the winning bidder on the Crowne Suite Unit and to quote Egret, I am giddy. Just wanted you all to know this is my first timeshare. I'm not a broker who's going to flip this and could not be more excited to get down there! HHI is my favorite place on earth, I started going as a child back in the 70's and always dreamt about owning my own little slice of paradise. I want to thank you all for some fantastic info on the suite... Was wondering if anyone had any interior pictures or knew of anyway I could get my hands on some? I'm dying to get a sneak peak and won't be using it for the first time until Sept '13. Thank you for any help you may be able to lend and thank you all for your wonderful info.

Cheers!

Suldigity; Welcome to TUG. What was the exact week did you obtain there and what was the final bid price?

Congratulations to the winning bidder! Sandytoes was in the Crowne Suite in January and may have some pics to share. She said it was awesome.

I bet you are giddy! I really thought the winning bidder was one of our long time Hilton Head Marriott owners.

Enjoy! :D

I did think you were probably the winning bidder

I was in it at $1500 but didn't want to go any higher so I let it go.

I originally put a snipe in at $1599.99, but changed it to $2199.99 about 6 minutes prior to the end of the auction. I really had no business bidding on that timeshare, but, as I said, I couldn't stop myself (fortunately, I placed a limit on myself). No regrets that I didn't win and it is probably a blessing that I didn't.

Were you looking at that auction prior to it being mentioned here on TUG? When I saw this thread start up, I was like, doggone it; why'd ya have to bring it to the attention of other Tuggers, George?

Perhaps, George was the one that saved me from myself. If so, bless you, George. While that unit may indeed be worthy of that MF, I really have no business with a timeshare that has a MF of that proportion.

What an interesting villa. There are a couple of pictures on Trip Advisor, at least the outdoor deck portion. With a limited third bedroom and the double maintenance fee, it would almost seem more logical to purchase two, 2 bedroom units. This would give you four bedrooms, an extra kitchen, and more for the same maintenance fee. Perhaps not the ocean view or the "crowne suite", but you would have the flexibility to use on two different weeks or trade one for something else.

Then again, the thought of owning a week at the only "crowne suite" in Marriott Monarch does sound nice. I wonder if this is where JW and/or the Marriott family used to stay?

Egret,

Funny you should mention that... I found the listing on eBay without ever having read this most recent thread. When I Googled the Crowne Suite a few days ago I was able to pull up your old thread from last year when you inquired about the unti. It wasn't until the auction ended that I found the most recent thread that Bogey started on the 4th. I too was slightly (and I do mean slightly) miffed at first because I thought a few of the bidders I was bidding against may have been from this site and it drove the price up. I really wanted the unit though and actually had my final bid significantly higher than what I bought the unit for. Like you I probably spent more than I should have but I'm happy. Hopefully I'll still be happy when January rolls around. If you have any pictures I would absolutely love to see them. Please let me know. Thanks again!

Egret, I'm sorry, I got you and Sandytoes mixed up. Hopefully Sandy may be able to help me with a couple of pics.

And my highest bid was 2800... Much higher than I told myself I would go with 10 minutes left in the auction.

To answer your Q Time Traveler, it was week 36.

Cheers,

Trust me. Forget the inside of the unit which is awesome, the hugh oceanfront high up (5th floor) deck with its own hot tub makes the Crown Suite worth the money all by itself. I sold my mid August Week for $41,000 back around 2002-2003. New owner gets a mid September Week for less than $3,000. I assume purchaser bought to use. If so, it is far more valuable than two 2 bedroom units.

George
