Oh my goodness, folks. I have a leaking drain pipe in the basement. Getting a plumber in the best of times is a "situation." I called no fewer than TEN different folks. "No...we're not going into people's homes because of the virus." So what am I supposed to do??? Truly, no one goes in the basement. It's probably the safest place you people have been in two weeks. GOOD GRIEF.

Finally got someone to come, who had to call someone else, who has now gone out for parts. I'm about ready to build an outhouse. It would be quicker at this rate.

I know that the virus is serious. I get it. But it is ten feet from my front door to the door to the basement. You can hold your breath that far, and I'll open all the doors in advance. Common sense has left the building..... Bottom line: LIFE GOES ON.

Thank you for letting me rant! ;) Figuring out which one of my children is going to become a plumber.... :)

Well, let's see. You can stop using water and that will stop the leak. If you can't stop using water then restrict the use of water and thus restrict what is leaking. If you cannot stop using water then you can wrap the leaking area with old towels or other and/or place a bucket or other container below the leak to catch whatever is leaking.

How are you going to wash your hands for twenty seconds to control the virus?
I have no idea what a drain pipe is in a basement.

A couple of weeks ago I had no problem getting a plumber to replace my mother's toilet in her high rise condo.
Now with everything shut down and "stay in place" it's more difficult

It's the pipe that drains all of the house to the septic system. But he's been here, and it's fixed. Thank goodness.

Getting services it 'hit & miss'. Some areas, and certain businesses are shut down, and some are at the discretion of workers. For instance, we had no trouble getting a plumber or yard spray last week, a neighborhood chiropractor is open, and says business is off by half, but it is impossible to get a haircut! Traditionally, our lawn service starts for the season in April. No word on whether they are coming or not. Time will tell.

Glad you got it done.

Did he just snake the drain? My nephew is a master plumber, but he is in Texas by Lake Austin. He is not really close enough for a house call. Mason is a little salesman. By the time he walked out, he would have sold you a hot water heater, a water softener, and a few Toto Drake toilets. It would have been worthwhile.

No...it had a hole in one of the "feeder" pipes. This house was built in 1850, and that was probably one of the original cast iron pipes from when the plumbing was installed way back when. Now it's PVC, so hopefully no more holes!

Yeah, we just closed on a condo (great timing, huh) and it's almost turn key but all of the master bath fixtures need to be replaced. We cannot get a plumber to *return* our calls. In reading this thread I noticed missy's comment about them not wanting to be exposed to people so I told my husband to make sure that they know that the unit is vacant. Our daughter was supposed to move in and get a roommate and I don't see that happening soon as she just got laid off. Oh well, we will get through this but I sure didn't expect to be carrying a mortgage payment.

As a temporary measure:
Try wrapping it with duct tape, flex tape, or similar.
Spread some plumber's goop around it...
Then put a pail under it. <plumbing humor>

Not wanting to chance it I had the septic tank pumped 3 weeks ago by a plumbing contractor I know. It wasn't quite full but full enough after 5 years. Now this contractor has these guys laid off so I'm glad the tanks empty.

Near the sea.
We had one of those 100 yr old houses and one year the clay pipes cracked and “stuff” clogged it up. Plumber had to bring the backhoe. I remember those days.
