“....Social isolation is hard for humans of all ages. But because teenagers and young adults are more attuned to social status than the rest of us, it is even more profoundly distressing for them.
In addition, their hard-wired attunement to social status makes them super touchy about whether or not they are being treated like children. This means that they feel infantilized when ordered to shelter-in-place”

I feel that especially high school seniors and college seniors are having a hard time.
Neither group will have a real graduations experiences. They will not march across a stage to receive their high school diploma or their college degrees.

Many are missing that social contact with their senior classmates.

Many high schools sports athletes will lose out on receiving that college scholarship because they will not be able to display their sports skills in baseball, basketball, track, golf, football, field hockey, and tennis, etc.

Also those college graduates are losing out on their last year experiences on campus . IMO.

There are many articles online about how Covid-19 is affecting mental health. From the responses to my post here on TUG about how people are handling their anxiety/worry/stress, I am seeing that people are resilient and not as worried as I expected. Kids and teens are more resilient than adults. I think they will get through this better than the rest of us.

My teenage daughter is struggling . A LOT. As in, im
Concerned about her mental health. Has zero to do with anxiety about getting sick but the complete isolation she’s feeling. It’s really awful.

I’m so sorry. It’s an awful feeling when a parent feels helpless to ease our baby’s hurt. I’m hoping the next few weeks, if things go well, we can finally have a bit more definition on getting back to a new normal.
Our schools called off for rest of year fairly early. But our district asked for input on what to do for graduation and prom. Overwhelmingly parents wanted to do something in person. Obviously it can’t happen before end of SIP. Graduation is rescheduled for first week of August- so the kids will be able to get their diploma etc. it’s at the state university here in town huge hall so distancing and limiting can happen as needed. Tentatively Prom is rescheduled for end of July. Not what was the original idea back in May but the kids will get some kind of closure. I think just having a plan (even if it may change) is giving a boost to kids and parents.

My college senior isn’t as upset about not getting to walk at her graduation as I’d thought she’d be, she’s pretty excited about grad school in the fall, and she’ll likely go on through getting her PhD anyway- now that is a graduation I don’t want to miss!
