Could someone help a newbie with RCI Weeks exchanges?

My parents own 2 weeks at a Gold Crown Resort (a 2-bedroom), and they think they are members of Weeks and Points. They are not sophisticated about this, and have always just called RCI and asked what they could get.

I'm trying to organize a joint trip with them to Orlando in 2007, and have been researching the resorts. Many are Weeks only resorts, not Points, but my parents have always gone to Points resorts. With points it is easy to see how many points are needed to get the weeks we want at which resort. But how do we figure out what they can get in Weeks for their 2 weeks? i.e. they have a 2 bedroom in weeks 44 and 45, and we want a 3 bedroom in weeks 18 & 19 - how do we compare resorts under the Weeks system and know which ones we could trade into? The resort they own at is a highly rated Gold Crown.

To me, the Points system is pretty straightforward - either you have the points required for a certain resort (and you only need to find availability), or you don't (and may have to buy some etc.). But I cannot tell how to determine what their resort is worth under the Weeks system - and I want to know, because some of the resorts at the top of my list are not on the Points system.

We have not been able the log into RCI either to get more info - the log in info they gave me isn't working.

Thanks for any help you can give me! And please remember I am a total newbie, and I do not understand all the terminology, so please make it a very basic explanation! :)

Weeks is based on supply and demand, which fluctuate constantly.

Going to Orlando, you should do better in Weeks than in Points, because Orlando is overbuilt, leaving an excess of supply over demand much of the year. That means blue weeks most places will easily trade into Orlando.

The only thing to watch out for in Weeks is the VEP filter which will limit you from trading into resorts with ratings substantially higher or lower than what you are trading. It is sometimes possible to get them to disable the downward VEP filter.

So, if I log into Weeks (assuming I can get in) I should get a list of available week 18 & 19 2007 resorts, which will be constantly changing with supply/demand? And when I see a resort on my list I grab it?

If we do Weeks, do we then not deposit the home weeks to get points? How does that part work? I guess I'm not sure of the mechanics of doing Weeks vs Points.

JLB: my Dad has e-mailed RCI to try to sort out the log in issue. When I do get onto the website I will e-mail you to get specifics!

First of all, welcome to TUG. As far as Weeks are concerned, if you are looking for a week in 2007, search on the Weeks side. If you search in Points, you are limited to searching 10 months out for Points resorts. Many of the best weeks will be gone by then. You can search on the Weeks side more than 10 months out with Points, but you will see limited inventory. You will see more if you search within Weeks more than 10 months out. You must have a week that has been deposited within the spacebank to search on-line with RCI. That means that you have to actually deposit your week to conduct a search. If the week that you are looking for is not on-line, it is advisable to conduct an on-going search.

What that means is that you will have a search in place that will pick up your desired week when it becomes available provided that you have enough trade power and no quality of resort issues. You will basically reserve your place in line. The best weeks often never make it on-line. There have been a few glitches where the search has not picked up a week, but for the most part, it is the way to go if you are looking for a specific week. Orlando is a fairly easy exchange with RCI and the weeks that you are looking for seem like they should be very easy to obtain.

You might also want to take a look at the "Article" section here on TUG. Just click on the link at the top of this page or the link contained on the TUG home page. Take a look at the article entitled Timesharing 101. There are also several articles on the mechanics of exchanging. Also take a look at the "All Points Board" for questions regarding using Points weeks.

When you search weeks with your "deposited week "you search by date ,area, particular resort code and number of bedrooms needed(at bottom of page).
I suggest search by exact date range you want for weeks 18 and 19 in 2007. Watch your checkin day Fri,Sat or Sun) This will pull a list of available inventory at that time which can change daily. If you find the exact resort week you want then click the exchange button and it will lead you to a confirmation page to print out.

You can place the resort on "hold" for 24 hours for instance if you want to research airfare etc. If on hold you must confirm online or via phone that you really want the week or you will lose it within that timeframe.

There are many beautiful resorts in Orlando . Good luck and welcome to TUG. You will learn how to best use timeshare trades on this board.
