The sickest to my stomach I've ever been is after buying some Huli HulI chicken from a truck on the side of the road in Maui! Probably just bad luck that day. I'm not totally turned off. Whatever it was went through me quickly.

The chicken was delicious, but I started throwing up pretty soon after I ate it. My son got pretty sick too. We got better as soon as the food was out of our system. Didn't even need medicine.

Buying fish or other proteins from less than well refrigerated and cleansed containers can have bad consequences. At least with raw plant material you can wash it before eating.

I went to Kauai in 2000 and bought some beach shoes from a big general store. Theses shoes need replacement, but I can’t remember the name of the store. They cost$4 or $5 new

Even when there were 4 or more of us traveling we always had left overs that needed to be thrown out when we shopped at Costco. These days the only things we might buy (but didn't even do that on our last trip) is sunscreen and chocolate covered mac nuts.

We shop Costco at home all the time, but we have a freezer for a lot of what we buy.

It's been my experience that kind of sick takes about 36 hours to rear its ugly head. People usually go with "the last thing they ate" because that's what's coming up, and out, and making a mess of the bathroom. But it was probably three or four meals prior to that.

Not 100% of the time, of course,

When lots of people get sick in Las Vegas, they can pinpoint the source by asking people for their credit card info -- when the various restaurant bills are charged. They can often pinpoint not only the restaurant, but which dish was the culprit. "Everyone who got sick had the Caesar salad at Chez Snootie on 6/25, and most of the charges were around 7pm. "That's when we changed out the dressing."

God help the cook/chef who was in charge of that when it happened. That's not just a pink slip -- but a career change.

I am not sure I have done any shopping at Costco while on vacation.. In Hawaii we usually hit up Foodland or Safeway. Costco might be cheaper, but its usually just my wife and I, and i hate to throw out excess food.

We go to Costco if there’s one close by anywhere we vacation especially if we have family with us or will be out for a couple of weeks. I like the sparkling ice. Hubby likes beer and liquor. We always get water. Water in
Hawaii ok to drink but I like freezing bottles and putting a couple in my folding cooler to take sightseeing or to the beach. It’s easier to pack and go. When in Hawaii, I buy my island favorites like char siu bao, sushi and lau lau ( Keokis) when outer Island but Get them fresh on Oahu in a restaurant so bypass Costco. We get our steaks from Costco for BBQ and I might get a roast chicken. Those are good no matter where you are. Snacks of any kind are a good buy at Costco. I even scored Wun Tun chips a few times. those are hit or miss. You might find it once but might not the next time you go back. There’s other things I’ll pick up that you can’t find on the mainland but have to be cautious if it needs refrigeration because the packages are so big and depending on how many people are with us or how long we stay we might not be able to finish them up. Longs Drug store is a good place to find the brand of cookies I like, the Hawaiian Sun jams and Chinese preserved fruits (crack seed, see moi etc) especially if you catch a sale. If I hit a sale, I’ll stock up on those items to bring home with me.

We have friends who are local and are happy to take our leftovers. It's worked well, and if they don't need the food, they distribute to those who are in need. I think one of our friends is moving off of the island this year to get a better job with better pay.

The foodland at the Ala Moana mall has a bar in the prepared food area. You can down your poke with a glass of wine in store. I love that section. So much good food to bring back to the unit.

I just like to shop "Other People's Costcos" because I am curious and I enjoy noticing the differences in layout, stock selection, etc. Because I am a Costco nerd like that.
Me too! When we stop for gas on the road, I want to walk around the Costco to both stretch my legs and see if they have anything different from home.

@rickandcindy23 understands. :D

Also, what is the plural of Costco? "Costcos" in my earlier post still looks weird to me. Or is it like lei--both singular and plural? Does @DaveNV have an answer?
Rick watches me walking around the store and hangs with me a bit, but he has been known to comment about how he is going to have to pass all of those slow cars and semi-trucks he already passed once. :)

I don't know if it's THE answer, but I have AN answer:

The location is a "Costco Warehouse." Technically, "Costco" is an adjective, describing the noun "Warehouse." It's a word to more accurately describe a type of warehouse. So if you refer to them as "Costco Warehouses" it looks and seems normal. So while "Costcos" may not be entirely grammatically correct, it certainly is vernacularly, (if that's even a word.) So I vote Yes, "Costcos" is a perfectly accurate term, since use of it is immediately clear to the reader. One is a Costco, two would be Costcos.

With sincere apologies to my longsuffering 7th Grade English teacher. Sorry, Miss Brown! :D

Can you ask Miss Brown to analyze Walgreens? It's Walgreens, not Walgreen's. Founders last name was Walgreen, but business is Walgreens. So if you seek multiple locations it should be Walgreens's o_O:LOL: (Sorry for the thread hack.)

We have enjoyed visiting Costco in Melbourne on a rainy day. Many very different products. More Asian stuff. In Vancouver BC they were handing out samples of some very good Lamb. The Tequila is inexpensive in Mexico.

Not exactly that simple.

Walgreens is a singular noun, made from a proper name word that was gramatically incorrect to begin with. The man was named Walgreen, so his store should have been called Walgreen's, with the singular possessive "apostrophe S" added to the end. They decided to drop the apostrophe and just add the S, making the word an incorrect noun from the beginning. Adding an "apostrophe S" to the end of that makes it into a singular possessive noun, implying "belonging to [one] Walgreens location."

To make Walgreens plural, (as in "multiple Walgreens locations") I think it should be Walgreenses. Adding just an apostrophe makes it singular possessive, as in "belonging to Walgreens."

So technically, (again, with sincere apologies to Miss Brown,) it should not be Walgreens' or Walgreens's. To refer to multiples Walgreens location would be Walgreenses.

I think. My head hurts... :D

Most pathogens listed are less than 24 hours.

Most pathogens listed are less than 24 hours.
But the two big ones are e. coli and salmonella -- both of which have some incubation time. Norovirus is a distant third. Shigella, usually from oysters, is a very distant fourth. (But there is no kind of hell like a bad oyster.)

Best rule of thumb is "what did I eat 24-36 hours ago?" And I go with 36 because that's the absolute most common time frame. You would not believe how many restaurants suffer from the "you're the last place I ate so you must have made me sick" syndrome.

When the Nevada Department of Health starts collecting credit card statements, it's almost always at least a day and usually a day and a half.

Food allergies on the other hand, happen very quickly. And many people blame poor hygiene when it's really just a food allergy. Some of them sneak up on a person later in life. I can no longer eat abalone. And that's a shame because I *love* abalone. I'm hoping it's just one species I can't have. And I'm terrified that other mollusks are about to give me problems. Losing clams and oysters would be a real blow. The first time I was sick, I passed it off as something wrong with the particular abalone steak. My wife didn't get sick, after all. Second time, same symptoms, but worse, in a matter of hours. Had it tested -- I'm definitely allergic. And I wasn't for my entire life up until my 50s.

For something we do a few times every single day, humans are pretty bad about their understanding of food and what happens when consuming it.

My one confirmed experience was an onset of about 6-8 hours. Everyone who ordered the beef in our party of ~12, but only those who ordered the beef were violently ill for about 24 hours. I suppose it is possible that all of (and only) those people also ate the same thing the day before, but doubtful.

Rome is not that much fun when you can't go more than ten yards from your bathroom. There were precisely three TV stations I could understand that would at least sometimes use English. CNN World (which repeated itself every 30 minutes), MTV Europe, and BBC Sport. This was during the Tour de France, and I found much to my surprise that bike racing is a lot of fun to watch.

That was probably staph. It happens -- which is why I don't use "always/never" when describing symptoms. Also because I'm not a physician. But from sheer number of cases, it's usually salmonella or e coli -- which takes longer to develop.

We watched restaurants go down in flames because of food poisoning. When Jack in the Box, Burger King or a supermarket chain poison people, it makes the national news and is then forgotten about a few months later. When Chef Celebrity at Chez Snootie kills a retiree with e coli, that's that for his restaurant. The resort shuts him down and replaces him with Chef Competing Celebrity. When this happens, every cook and chef in Las Vegas knows what happened and who was to blame in a matter of minutes -- word travels fast.

The only more-sure way to get tossed off the Strip is to commit sexual assault against your staff. Merely stealing tips from them or working them without pay isn't enough. That guy is still there.

Speaking of unusual items at Costco, I saw this single malt scotch a few weeks ago at the Costco in Gypsum, CO (near the Vail/Eagle airport). It's not often than I see very expensive ($27,000) items at Costco.
