How early do you have to deposit your week with HGVC?
[W]hen would I have to deposit with HGVC to get the full 5,000 points for the week?

For a flex week, from what I'm told... At the time when you pick your weeks, they'll
ask you to make an election before booking it, but you can still cancel it and get
the points until a cut-off, which IIRC is 30 days before check-in.
@Panina is our resident guru on Eagle's Nest.

I've already cancelled my 2022 week (~15 mos. out) 'cuz I need to borrow some.

Yes, that is correct. If you cancel your home week reservation at least 30 days before check in date, you will receive your full allotment of points for that week. No special rules for affiliates vs. HGV-owned resorts.

And here is a special, kind of related, twist: I own week 52 at The Surf Club, and when there is a week 53 (every few years), I get the use of that week as well for a nominal cleaning fee. The week shows up in my HGV account, but the week is actually worth zero points. If I cancel it in HGV, I get nothing. However, I could deposit it in a personal RCI account (most SW FL properties are dually affiliated with HGV and RCI and/or II). Or I could rent it out. Not sure why anyone would cancel the week in HGV and get nothing, though.

If it’s an offer to enroll for free or very low cost, why NOT do it? The club fee is negligible in the long run for the times when you will appreciate the extra flexibility.

I'll likely enroll. Thanks to the tugger for pointing out the free enrollment. Yes, flex has a lot of value these days! One year of maintenance fees if not being able to use my SW FL week would be 5+ HGVC annual fees.
