Overnight passenger vessels that carry more than 100 people — like cruise ships — are prohibited from operating in Canadian waters until at least Oct. 31, the federal transport minister announced on Friday.

We're not about to cruise anywhere this year or next.

We liked and have done several New England cruises to Canada. But we have cancel all cruises for the year 2020.

Wonder what crystal ball the government has to be able to see 5 months into the future. In other words why are they not extending certain bans by weeks or 30 days? Seems like quite a large over reach to me.

IMHO, @am1 probably hit the nail on the head. This timeline allows them to eliminate the cruise season in most of the Canadian waters so they don’t end up with a long list of ships that have booked passage and then need to deal with new restrictions every 30 days.

This will likely cause the cancellation of two Fall '20 West Coast cruises that I booked late last year. That's cool with me because I was probably going to cancel anyway...

If the border opens up this would be a great time to visit Victoria or Vancouver without the cruise ship crowds. For Victoria especially I think this will make quite the difference. Don't know how much traffic cruise ships bring in to eastern Canada but I think it would be quite a lot for a small city like Quebec City.

Cruise ships offer very little for drive to locations. Easier to cancel cruises and possibly allow for drive to or fly to vacationers who spend less money. It also lets the outfitters know where they stand and not rely on cruise passengers.

Canadian ports are really a cheap way to allow US cruises to operate without paying a “fair” wage which a few on here have been against.

We have 2 cruises out of Canadian ports booked for Sept & Oct '21. The first is a Celebrity Pacific Coastal departing from Vancouver ending in L.A. and the second a r/t Montreal on RCCL's ancient ship Empress that includes 2 ports on Newfoundland, a bucket list province for us.

We really hope that the Covid situation is contained by then. Prior to the Celeb cruise we plan on flying into Calgary and spending @week in the Canadian Rockies, also a must-see destination, going all the way to Jasper and then to Vancover to catch the Millennium.

Newfoundland is a great place to visit. Both east and west coasts were great never made it north to where the Vikings landed.

Foreign flagged ships (ie all cruise ships) need to stop in a foreign port on every voyage for regulatory reasons. So (unless an exemption is granted) this will cancel all Alaska cruises this summer (unless they try to stop in Mexico or Russia or something like that)

Both Mexico and Russia would be a week or more out of the way. Week long Alaska sailings are done for the year.
