Probably Army Engineers ~ my DH was an Engineer in a bridge building unit in Germany.

From what I understood, the bridges were ok after the storm, it was the land sections of the causeway that were badly damaged. Much easier to provide a temporary fix to that vs. having to fix a bridge.

I think what may have caused confusion is that several of the immediate approaches to the bridges was where there were complete washouts, so it could be confused for damage to the actual bridges themselves. There are three separate bridges that are part of the whole causeway.
