Continental Airline Tickets to Barcelona

We wanted to use our frequent flyer miles for an upgrade. The web site said that we had to call Continental for upgrades. We contacted Continental almost 5 months in advance. We were advised by Continental that on the day of travel to Barcelona, upgrades were not available. We were advised that on the return flight the upgrades were available but that we would have to pay an additional $500 per ticket along with our points. We were also advised that Continental would not release bulkhead or exit row seats until 24 hr prior to departure. Round trip coach tickets for two cost $1582.48. Round-trip first class tickets for two would cost about $11,000 without an upgrade. We ultimately decided to just purchase the round-trip coach tickets and forget about the upgrades.

We have redeemed frequent fly miles previously for round-trip coach tickets from Houston to Puerto Rico without difficulty. This has been our only previous experience with frequent flyer redemptions. Are upgrades with Continental to Europe routinely a bigger hassle?

Anything FF to Europe on any airline is a hassle. $1582.48/2 central US to Europe sounds like a great price, but obviously it doesn't meet the airline's criteria for enough paid to use FF upgrades. You must not be going in summer.
