I see that there has been some controversial postings on this topic, but I have been away from the boards for a bit so I missed the fray.

We have a trip to Cancun planned for March, but are still considering cancelling it. We really don't want to spend our hard-earned money on a vacation that may be less than desirable. We just don't take that many of them. In additon to the beach situation, I understand that several family-oriented areas (such as the water park, and La Isla) are still closed.

I don't want to start another difficult discussion so please...if you feel more comfortable expressing your opinion privately, please click on the e-mail button and e-mail me.

Thanks,

Sharon

I realize that you may be uncomfortable with going to Cancun right now. I realize that Cancun isn't as good now as it was last year at this time, but I also realize that it's getting better all the time and that it still has a lot of good things open and available now. Will it be better next month than it is now? definitely, but it probably won't be 100% for a few more months. If I had the chance to go now I probably would go.

On the other hand, if I had never been to Cancun, I may not want to go right now either (because I'd be looking for a perfect vacation).

I assume you have seen the weekly photo updates on the Royals website? If not take a look, also view the other photos others have posted on webshots, etc.

If after all that you aren't certain that you should go, then by all means cancel. After all, the only ones that need to be happy with your vacation are you and your family. Vacations are for enjoyment, not stress so do what you think is best.

I just postd a few new photo's from the Phase 1 beach, they were taken on Wednesday. Lost a little beach yesterday due to a pretty windy day and big surf but you can still sit out on the beach. They are moving sand to our south near the Hilton. The entire area is really working hard to get things back to normal or better. They are still planting more palms in the median on the Blvd. They are finishing the repairs to the steps at Phase 1 going to the beach, new concrete and tile, might be completed today. If you have any other questions just ask.

I would say the two biggest considerations are where are you staying, and what do you enjoy doing? We went to Cancun in January, and really enjoyed it. We stayed at the Royal Sands which is in pristine condition. We had an oceanfront unit. We enjoy sitting on the beach and relaxing, we went swimming in the ocean (on days when the ocean was not too rough), swam in the warm resort pools, went sailing, and we went to Xcaret. We went into town to shop at Walmart/Sam's Club. The restaraunts at the resort where all open so we didn't see a need to venture far from the resort. It was very relaxing.
Yes, the beach is half washed away, and probably won't be back until dredging is complete. Most of the hotels are in terrible condition, and there is work going on around the clock. Didn't affect us. The Sheraton has already been demolished, and is being rebuilt. I have heard that the Hilton, and Ritz-Carlton are being re-built. I think it's about time. They are old and need to improve. There was plenty of shopping available, and a beautiful new mall near the Sands. We saw plenty of restaurants open. I don't know about bars, they don't really interest me. Is there enough for you to keep busy? Definitely.
I'm glad we went, but only you can decide if you want to go and if you will enjoy your trip. We've had trips where it rained almost everyday. We still found things to do, and enjoyed being together.

Thank you everyone.

Our reservation is at the Royal Islander, which I'm sure is doing very well compared to other, non-Royals, resorts. Just want to make it special!

I would cancel and instead go to Aruba, the DR, or Hawaii. By the recent pictures you cannot call that a beach! You have to remember that Cancun is all man-made. The beaches would have to be rebuilt and it's going to be a long time before they get it back to how it was.

I was at the Islander in December and had a great time with my wife and 2 kids! We stayed around the Tri Royals most of the week and had so much fun.. its hard to do alot with two kids under 3 yrs anyway.. If I were you I would go if I was staying at a Royal resort, you can still go to the beach and swim and do all the same stuff, We are heading back on April 22.. All I can say is go and have a GREAT time! :)

I must have missed the controversial postings.
I think everyone agrees the Royals are in Great shape.
The beaches at the Tri-Royals are not in there Prime condition but nice enough and much better than many places I have stayed and even some in Hawaii.
The beach restoration project has started and by March the Tri-royal beaches should be restored to better than pre-wilma condition.

The Rest of Cancun is still recovering and I seriously doubt will be in its prime anytime soon.
You obviously are still very concerened and worried that things won't be perfect so I suggest you cancel and pick a different vacation destination like the Maya Riviera for your family. You can always goto Cancun latter when its had the necessary time fully recover.

Sharon-
I recall that a while ago you were asking about activities in and around Cancun as part of your vacation planning. While I understand that the recovery is going well, not everything is back to the condition that it was in prior to the hurricane. So, if off-resort activities still contribute to your plans this might not be the best time for a first-time Cancun vacation. Though I suspect that your family would have a great time using the Royal's facilities. These are very nice resorts and the staffs at each of them are just terrific.
But I can't help but think that if you're considering cancellation your experience may not meet your expectations. On the other hand, if it were me I'd go. The Royals won't be over-run by spring breakers and it appears that one of my favorites - Xcaret - is coming back okay.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Conditions in Can Cun, 1977 vs. 2006

I have been going to Can Cun since 1975, when there was only the Hyatt, the Camino Real, and a few hotels and restaurants. I had a fabulous time. I went back in 1977 and bought at Vacation Clubs and had a great time then, and there were hardly any restaurants or things to do...

Can Cun now, Post Wilma, is 10 times better than Can Cun in 1975... So the Isla is closed, so who cares? It wasn't there 5 years ago, either, and Can Cun was terrific 5 years ago. So many other hotels are closed, so who cares? You are not staying at those hotels, and there are less people at the good restaurants and shopping centers are less crowded.

I went to Can Cun in early December and again for Christmas and New Year, so I am speaking from first hand experience... I thought Can Cun was more beautiful than ever, in spite of the rocks on the beach. There is no problem with the beach... If you are staying at the Royal Islander, you have plenty of beach right in front of the Royal Islander, or you have plenty of beach at the Royal Caribbean. So there are some rocks here and there, so who cares?

There is plenty of beach without rocks, you won't have any problem at all getting into what is available, which is about 80% of what was there before Wilma.

Are you going to Can Cun for a week, or are you thinking of moving there? If it is only for one week, there is too much for you to do in one week... you won't miss Water World, or La Isla, (if it is still closed in March... In early January it looked like it would open soon...) or whatever else is closed. There are too many excellent restaurants open... too many activities like scuba diving, parachuting, sailing, snorkelling which are back to normal... So who cares if some things are closed? There is plenty open, and you don't have to stand in long lines to enjoy them.

But... I really do agree with those who have told you to choose another place. Can Cun isn't perfect right now. Many excellent restaurants are closed. You cannot go to Contoy to see the flamingos... So go to Playa del Carmen, which was not damaged by Wilma... Or go to Disneyworld or Las Vegas this year, and go to Can Cun some other year, when everything is fixed...

I hope you enjoy your vacation. - Ellis

We went to Xcaret in Jan and it was great! We went with Thomas More from the Royal Sands. I could not see any damage at Xcaret. We did the dolphin swim in the new facility. We did the dolphin swim about 4 years ago, and to be honest I had a better time because we were in a smaller group and spent the entire hour in the water with the dolphins. This time the resort was not crowded at all and we got to do and see alot more things than we did last time. I'm so glad I took my wetsuit for the cave swim - it was a little brisk. We liked the improvements, and enjoyed the show.
