I am trying to get info on buying a time share. Is there anywhere I can find out the differences in time shares between Westin and Marriott?
Options, points, and blackout dates............. my head is spinning.

TUG forums to review

Trader Joe-
Go especially to the Hotel-based forum and the Marriott forum..
Read, read, read- for at least 2 months before you buy anything- that's the best advice I learned from so many at Tug...I fianally bought a Starwood- the Westin Kierland (of course re-sale)- don't buy from developer and pay twice as much. And of course- become a full member of TUG, it's alittle bit of money- for a lot of knowledge- you'll be glad you joined! Best. :)

Click on ADVICE in the red bar at the top of the page and read the articles about Marriott and Westin. If I were you, I would try out both systems by purchasing promo packages, (very inexpensive) staying at the resorts where you are consider buying, and going to a sales presentation - then buy resale!!!!
For example, Promo pkgs. for Hawaii are in the $700 range for 5 nights + a rental car + a hotel gift certificate.

Tried that. They won't allow Oregon residents to attend.

Who won't? Starwood and Marriott? What Starwood resort were you trying to get the promo Pkg. for and I will check.

Actually it was HGVC. It had a list of states that were not allowed to participate and Oregon was one of them.

My bad. I jumped to the conclusion that if one timeshare company wasn't allowed to extend this offer to Oregon residents, none of them could.

I emailed owner referral services and Starwood DOES offer promotional packages to Oregon residents...

I'm pretty sure you can attend anything you want. It's not that you are an Oregon resident, it's that they don't have a real estate license in Oregon. Real estate laws vary by state and Oregon's rules may be stricter than most. They are probably prohibited from having any type of sales discussion with you on the phone (or mail or email) while you are physically in Oregon.

This all changes once you cross the state line. If you visit one of their properties (where they obviously have a state license), everyone is treated the same.

The first time I ever called Marriott Telesales, they would not give me any specific sales data on the phone - because I was calling from Oregon. Several months later I bought a Marriott resale. Once I was in their system as an owner, they could tell me anything I wanted over the phone. It seems that once you are a "member" or "existing customer", they can speak to you freely.
