Coconut Plantation status

According to the status link below, it sounds like the lazy river is back open - and no mention of the elevators. The only mentioned issue is the beach still being closed.

Can anyone who has been there recently give an update?

It does say that elevator service has been restored to all buildings, but may see some disruptions.

We were there for a few nights this past weekend and were pleasantly surprised to find the river was back up and running. It will take a while for all the landscaping to fully mature again, but I thought the place looked great all things considered. The golf course is being redone, so the surrounding views aren’t currently what they were pre-storm, but the usability of the immediate facilities seemed back up to normal levels (with the exception of the pool-side bar and the small playground which are both still being worked on). The beach is still down, of course, and they weren’t doing day passes to the hotel pools as those are still being worked on, as well, but besides those two things I would say the experience is very similar to what we enjoyed pre-storm.

@GTLINZ , We were there at the end of March and that Friday before our check in the elevators all became operational again... Friends just stayed there last week and said everthing is open, including lazy river... The only thing not available is the recipicole with the Hyatt Regency and the Island Beach

Hopefully someone will attend an owner's meeting and get an update on Big Hickory Island.

When we were down there in Jan we saw pics in the lobby - the island itself was rearranged and the docks at the hotel and the beach either damaged or destroyed. So there was a huge amount of work to do.

I did go ahead and call the resort.

The rep indicated that they are working on the marinas and the island. August is the target, could be July, expected to be done by Sept. One can hope.

Really need to start pushing that forward. There are too many August hurricanes these days. (Katrina, for instance.) The season technically starts in June. But it wouldn't surprise me AT ALL to see May hurricanes. Just need high enough ocean temperatures.

Yes the season technically starts in June, but if you look at the ones to hit Florida, Dennis in 2005 and alma in 1966 are the only ones to hit before august. Funny you use “these days” for a hurricane that hit 18 years ago.
I live 20 minutes away from coconut, and many are still waiting for roof replacement; hopefully they will get them before the next hurricanes

Because living in Hurricane country is like being a scrawny kid, locked in a batting cage, with a pitching machine which has an infinite number of baseballs. Someone keeps turning the frequency and hours per day up. And every day the kid wakes up and hopes nothing hits him.

Katrina, Andrew, Harvey, Bertha -- all fairly recent early hurricanes. Every time the Atlantic loads the dice, there's a chance.

When I was a child, tropical storms didn't blow up from TS to Cat. 4 in a matter of hours like they do now.

@GTLINZ, friends of ours just purchased a condo in Pelican Landing that shares the private Beach with Hyatt. Their were told at their closing that it will be 3+ years before the island is restored

That is bad news! We have a few ladies in pelican landing that are in our ladies league. I loved going out to that beach but had the bad luck of having the windiest weather each time I went.

Andrew was over 30 years ago. Not sure what Bertha you are talking about. There have been no significant hurricanes of that name. In fact it is still in the rotation and will be a named storm again in 2026. There was also a decade long period of time (from 2006 to 2016) where there were no major hurricanes to make landfall in Florida. The 12 strongest Atlantic hurricanes recorded all happened prior to 1990 and the top eight were in the 60s or prior. We also only have just a little over a century of recorded hurricane data, so it is hard to really draw any definitive conclusions as to strength of storms over the millennia. The fact that you see more coverage of storms (because of technology and media) doesn't necessarily mean they are getting stronger or more prevalent.

The times already changed, after all. No more Freewheelin' for us. At least with all this extra heat, it will be easier for us to be blonde on blonde, if that's what you desire. And then we can all skedaddle to the relative safety of Highway 61. Bringin' it all back home before there's any blood on the tracks. Hurricanes affect more people now than before due to the increased building on the coast. The $ in damage are escalating due to that.

Years ago it was considered folly to build on the coast.

Coconut Plantation was saved due to the buildings being on piers and the clubhouse being built to the same height. And it was barely enough.

Yikes! Hopefully restored means fully restored - and their is some truth to the estimate.

It’s not a state park but lovers key is. Bonita beach is required to have a few free parking spots, we would cruise all the way to lot 10 and proceed to lovers key if we don’t find anything. That of course was before Ian.

@rapmarks, I'm hoping for our friends sake that it does not take that long to rebuild the island but they are still dredging the area for cars, boats, and all other sorts of goodies...I think it will take that long because so much of the area was damaged...I hope hurricane season is gentle to the Naples, Bonita Springs, and Ft. Myears area this year....
