Nice article about the Coco Palms status in Hawaii magazine email newsletter. Lotsa people would like to see it back again, including me, but there are $ problems of course in this economy. URL is http://www.hawaiimagazine.com/

Elvis's boat still floats. You can't tour except via Hawaii Movie Tours. Can't walk the royal palm forest because coconuts might clunk you on the head.

Still keeping my fingers crossed, Sterling

Thanks for posting this Sterling. A very special place for a lot of people, including DW and I.

Thanks for the post. The first time we were on Kauai was in 1976. We visited Coco Palms. Would love to see it restored/rebuilt.

In the late 70's we stayed in one of the King's Cottages across the lagoon from the main lobby. Our close friends stayed in the cottage next door. We loved the conch shell wash basins, the outdoor shower and lava soaking tub, and the pedestal bed. I still remember sitting along the railing in the restaurant watching the torch lighting ceremony, followed by an evening of entertainment in the cocktail lounge by Larry Rivera and his wife Gloria(?). Very kitschy, but pretty cool none the less.

After returning we watched Elvis' Blue Hawaii and we were surprised to see that our friends had stayed in the unit Elvis was in and we stayed in the cottage the "girls" were in. It was fun to see it all on the big screen. We have some great memories from our stay there. My only hope is that it will someday be restored so others that haven't had the chance to stay there can have the same memories that we have. There's just nothing like it in Hawaii today. :(

I saw that same article the other day. Interesting. Hope the new group can raise enough money to preserve it.

We saw a movie with Elvis in it, while we were on Kauai, and I was sure it was the Coco Palms. It was a corny movie, but the landscape was beautiful, and they showed Hanalei and the airport, too. I think it was called "Elvis in Paradise."
