Late this afternoon, the Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, made an announcement to Colorado Ski Country that he will be issuing an executive order tonight which will require the State’s ski resorts to close for a period of time. This, unfortunately, means that Telluride Ski Resort will close for the season effective immediately.

OK, I get the "flattening the curve" of the virus transmission, but the other side of the coin is the effect on so many people's livelihood. School closings and other closings where the employees continue to get paid make some kind of sense. There was only about another month of ski season, so maybe that will have minimal economic damage, but the US Government now seems determined to shut down the American economy.

It is likely that 10 times the number of Colorado residents are lined-up everday in the state's Costcos and grocery stores versus the ski areas' lift lines. The closing of the state's ski areas makes no sense when common sense is used.

"Flattening the curve" means that about the same number of people become infected, just over a longer timeline. It seems to me that it is past time to ask the question, "Is the economic illness that will afflict many more times the number of people who contract the corona virus, by step-wise shutting down the American economy -- and the lost jobs, lost homes, lost marriages, suicides -- worse than the effects of the viral disease?

The answer is : NO Government in the world wants the Italian version
news version .

The statistical projection version I read today (NY Times)- said if 9+ million
Americans have it simultaneously at the peak of the high version curve - ONE MILLION DIE.
Correct - who know / but no government wants to “own it .”

The death number projection is based on overwhelmed hospitals with finite ICU beds and ventilators .

*******

Let’s turn this into a timeshare story -
resort X (Italia Milan ) had 200 units and sold them all as fixed weeks = 10,400 week intervals .Then their hotshot sales force “sold them again “as points weeks
and management made 10 units Presidental Reserve 3 bedrooms with
ICU bed and respirators .
Then their IT dept. spent years on a computer upgrade called “Traveller”
but never got it quite right .

SO low and behold - 200 owners wanted to book one of those ICU - 3 bedrooms for Christmas week: to ski - and due to the prior screw ups - the computer let it happen and no one noticed until 200 people showed up at the front desk on Friday check in AND only the first 10 got a room because all the other units were full with other bookings .So the front desk told everyone else to go sleep in their cars until the next morning .
Unfortunately it got really cold and 80 froze to death the first night and of the remaining 110 - half died in an avalanche that buried the parking lot on Monday .
meanwhile - most people who had rooms were fine and a few were inconvenienced because their cars were damaged by the avalanche .

To prevent this from happening in any other resorts : the TS developer removed cancel & rebook and suspended some owners and changed the rules ,and made sure only those with Pres.Reserve could book week 51 - SO THAT THE CURVE was flattened and everyone could still book a week but not Christmas week .

It is too late. The Italian are facing what the Chinese are dealing with. In a couple of weeks, despite bureaucrats destroying the American economy, America will be where Italy is and China was.

NY Times 10% death rate from reporters? :poop:.

The death rate prediction from medical professionals who are following the Corona virus is more like 1%. Definitely worse than the flu, but no reason to shut down the world economy or panic buy toilet paper on the local level. The world has collectively lost its mind.

Yes, I agree.

Jared Polis only closed ski areas for one week, but he has to know the ski season for the remainder of the season is a done deal because one week isn't enough time for people to distance themselves from infected people. No ski resort will open next Sunday. Ain't going to happen. Meanwhile, our little timeshare resort still has us paying MF's, but we have to refund our renters.

The model I quoted was based on an ( if / when) 9 million people in the USA having it SIMULTANEOUSLY - and there being insufficient ICU beds and respirators for that peak time line .

I am not saying the model is correct / BUT -

1% of 9 million is 90,000 / but if 2% are sick enough to need an ICU bed
and ventilator = 180,000 . That is a higher number then what I have seen
for currently available ventilators . If more working ventilators are located or produced then the end death rate is reduced .
The other “solution “ is lowering the peak of the curve so that you can recycle your finite number of ventilators through more patients - over a longer time line .

*************
Same for : the week 51 peak use TS / vs spreading use across other intervals .

And now all restaurants and bars in Denver are closed to the general public starting 8am tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. Restaurants cans still provide take-out orders, but no seating.

Winter Park threw in the towel today:

"After careful thought and deliberation in light of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) developments, and in what we believe is in the best interest of our guests, employees and local communities, Winter Park Resort has suspended winter on-mountain operations, effective the morning of Sunday, March 15, until further notice.
