What are the pro's and cons's for each

Considering a Kauai trip
They both are in the same area-ish
Kauai Beach Villas charges a resort fee

Other than that, curious and would value feedback

Beachboy is former Shell, not sure if Kauai Beach Villas is, if that matters. I don't know anything about either of these resorts, but I always start with tripadvisor reviews when comparing Wyndham resorts in the same location, and Beachboy is an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars whereas, Villas is 4 out of 5 stars. Either way those are good reviews for both so I'm guessing you can't really go wrong here but I certainly defer to people who have actually been there.

I really prefer Beachboy. It's a beautiful resort, great location next to Coconut Marketplace, nice area.

When booking with Wyndham, we like Shearwater. It's worth the points.

Aloha,
2 of 3 KBV OF buildings are closed due to structural reasons. Owners at KBV whose units are entitled to OF are now competing for units in the one remaining OF building. I imagine that exchangers will have small chance of getting an OF unit.
KBV has been charging RCI exchangers a fee since about 2019 / 2020 but that did not originally apply to Wyndham points owners.

I've stayed at both several times, and I like them both! In fact I rated them both the same when I reviewed them for TUG, although for different reasons. They are both on my list of favorites and I choose between them depending on our plans for the week. In my opinion, here are a few of the differences.
  • Setting: Beachboy is only steps away from a shopping area with a convenience store, souvenir shops and several restaurants. KBV feels more secluded; you'll need to drive to get to shopping areas.
  • Beach: KBV's beach is wider and emptier; we found it great for walking on the beach, looking for shells and sea beans, and we've seen monk seals on the beach here. Beachboy's beach is narrower and often partially blocked by huge driftwood, but the area is more developed so there's a beachside sidewalk. Neither beach is swimmable. From the Beachboy you can walk to an area that's safe for swimming. At KBV we've seen people wading or fishing in a river that flows into the ocean at the edge of the property.
  • Pool: KBV has access to a really nice pool complex with a waterfall, water slide, sand-bottom pool (separate from main pool), and poolside food service. The young adults in our family loved hanging out here. Beachboy also has an attractive pool area but it's much smaller and we didn't use it.
  • Oceanfront views: Beachboy units are closer to the ocean, with beautiful views. KBV oceanfront units have structural problems, and our balcony was off limits for safety reasons. We could still see the ocean through the glass balcony doors but it was at a bit of a distance. I'm unsure whether a ground-floor unit in the oceanfront KBV buildings would have much of an ocean view at all, because of the way the land rises before sloping down to the beach.
  • Non-oceanfront views: The non-oceanfront units at Beachboy have a partial ocean view; from the balcony of these side units you can see the ocean to the east and the mountains to the west. At KBV, the non-oceanfront units overlook the manicured grounds.
  • Units: The Beachboy feels like what it is – a converted hotel. The layout is very basic and the kitchen feels a lot like a kitchenette. KBV units feel more spacious with a full kitchen. Both resorts feel quite dated and worn, but both have air conditioning at no extra cost, which many Kauai resorts lack.
  • Grounds: Beachboy's grounds are smaller but more lovely, with tiki torches and lush colorful landscaping. There's also an upscale on-site restaurant, the Hukilau Lanai. (If you want to eat there, you'll probably need to make reservations before your trip, which of course you could do regardless of where you stay.) KBV's grounds are more spacious, with more expanses of well-maintained lawn.
  • Location: KBV is a bit more central if you plan to explore both the north and south sides of the island. Beachboy is in the slow Kapa'a traffic (although you'll hit the traffic anyway if you go to the north side.)
  • Sales: At the Beachboy they've always persistently tried to get us to a sales meeting. KBV doesn't even bring it up.
I hope this helps! I feel sure you'll enjoy your experience, whichever site you choose!

Kauai Beach Villas is going out of business and is literally falling apart - we are owners there and we won't stay there.
