~ Chronicling America provides free access ~
to millions of historic American newspaper pages

Chronicling America is a Website providing access to information about historic newspapers and select digitized newspaper pages, It features Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages.

The directory of newspaper titles contains nearly 140,000 records of newspapers and libraries that hold copies of these newspapers. There are millions of digitized newspaper pages in Chronicling America. These pages span several decades and many U.S. states and territories.

Users of Chronicling America have the option
of performing basic or advanced searches...

Keyword searching will match words that appear in most narrative fields, including newspaper history essays associated with each digitized title.

For example, matching an exact phrase, using quotes around the words in the Keyword field, can also be useful if you know a standard Library of Congress subject heading, such as "penny papers".

Search for a Phrase by Selecting the Advanced Search tab and enter your phrase in the appropriate "...with the phrase" search box. When searching for a phrase, enter the words in the order they are most likely to occur. The order of search words does not affect the scope of the search results, but it will affect the order of their display.

View Pages and Save to PDF

Images of historic newspaper pages, as well as uncorrected page text, are displayed through your web browser. However, Chronicling America also contains high-resolution images (JPEG2000) and enhanced text (PDF) that may require special viewers. Adobe Acrobat Reader (DC document cloud) software can be downloaded free, making it easier than ever to work across computers and mobile devices. It's the only PDF viewer that can open and interact with all types of Portable Document Format content, including forms and multimedia.

Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress
