Last week DW and I had the amazing good fortune to see Chris Botti live in concert at the SFJazz Center. What an incredible experience! Botti and his band played non-stop for about 100 minutes, featuring a blend of smooth jazz, funk, improv, and pop--including solo instrumentals, strings with his melodious trumpet, and vocals from a couple of wonderful guest artists.
For those not familiar with Botti, he's an accomplished jazz artist who tours around the world, performing 250-300 concerts every year. Now 55 years old, Botti began his professional career in 1995. In 2001, Botti met Bobby Colomby, drummer and founding member of the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, who became his manager and producer. His signature sound is "chill"--smooth jazz with a touch of cool jazz.
My favorite piece is Botti's interpretation of the enchanting Cinema Paradiso. My favorite album release is entitled Italia, a collection of beautiful songs topped by the incomparable Nessun Dorma.
Speaking of the SFJazz Center, it is billed as the first free-standing concert hall devoted entirely to the performance and education of jazz music in America. Built in 2012, its acoustics and sound quality are second to none and intimate enough that you feel like you're listening to a concert in your living room (with about 600 of your closest friends).
