Hi,

I'm having trouble determining whether there are any good software programs that shield kids who have a laptop from accessing in appropriate web sites etc... Found NetNanny and WebWatcher but cannot locate any true independent reviews and so wonder about these...

Do any of you have experience with this type of software? My pre-teen is getting a laptop for his birthday.

Thanks,
LAR

The best advice is to locate the computer in a location where mom and dad can look over the kids shoulder and see what they are doing. Not in their bedroom....

Yep, no computer in the kid's bedroom in our house. We have a nook in the family room w/ a desk and the "family" computer is located there.

We also use BitDefender on all of our computers. In addition to being our anti-virus software, it also has parental controls that we can crank up on the family computer.

We did that too and also put a limit on the amount of on-line time allowed. Great software wasn't available then.

When inappropriate viewing became an issue we were able to discuss each event and why it was inappropriate. Boy, did we have some interesting (and uncomfortable) discussions, it was hard work but I got to know my growing DS better for it.

The school used blocking software and the kids spent an awful lot of time trying to crack the programme. I recall one young teen hacking into his (prestigious school) computer and re-writing the kids school reports and grading
