Fortunately someone tipped me off to check my confirmation to see if my itinerary for St. Martin had changed, and I did, and it did. There it was, waiting for me to confirm. I'm spoiled by AirTran and SW sending me email updates for this.
Heck, you'd better check any airline reservation you have on any carrier. The majority of my reservations have changed since making them. NWA won't even assign seats until shortly before the flight. I assume that's because people would get upset with equipement changes, flight changes, et....that would force seat assignment changes.
We've booked a cruise to the W. Med departing from BCN. For the first time I've added an air package onto the cost of the cruise. All because I would need to book 250 to 331 days out to get the flight times, seats and price I wanted only to have the airline change it to something that wouldn't work somewhere down the road. I would think that oversea's flights would tend to be affected more than others by the airlines consolidation practices.
Check your reservations every couple of months for changes. As it stands now, if you book in advance you can almost guarentee that something will change that you need to keep your eye on. It's hit or miss that the airline will actually notify you. So far, only United has notified us that our flights had changed. Everyone else I've found on random checks.
My long range reservations change continually, mostly by a few minutes or so. As an Elite member, I do get notices if it is a significant change. The airlines I fly (DL and AA) will send an email or phone message if you tell them to by using the notification part of their website.
Be aware however, you can get inundated with messages. I was once returning from the Left Coast and was already aboard a delayed flight. Every 15 minutes for about an hour, I got a phone call that the flight was delayed.![]()
