I am keeping mine. I also have the Ritz card, but usually prefer to earn Chase UR rather than Bonvoy for general travel to get the insurance. So far, I have managed to use most but not all of the bigger credits, so yes, it takes effort to maximize.

I am in the process of reviewing my credit card portfolio, and am planning to get rid of the Bonvoy Business and maybe the Bonvoy Brilliant. I do come out ahead on the Brilliant, but I'm not sure it's worth the chase for the FNC. The dining credit is easy, and I have not missed it yet, but another thing to track.

I’ve got the business Amex Bonvoy and the Chase Bonvoy card. I will hit lifetime Platinum next year so the business card will go. I might keep the Chase card on hand if I decide to dump the CSR and product change the Bonvoy card to the Ritz. I’ll probably dump my IHG card as well.

I agree with the claims being super easy with CSR. I wrote off a rental car, then also had a tire blowout experience in Scotland. Both costly, but completely covered by CSR
Our rental car was hit in the resort’s parking lot last week. We don’t know who did it.
Was the insurance claim process easy?
They sent me the link yesterday.

I made lifetime Plat last year, and my MVC status keeps me at Plat as long as I own it. I had originally thought it might help make Titanium, but I just wasn't doing enough Marriott stays to make that a reality. My fee on the Biz hits in Oct, so I will cancel before unless they offer enough of a retention bonus, but I am not even going to ask for one.

My wife is much less enthusiastic about the credit card game and is after me to simplify life and not spend brainpower chasing so many "perks"

I found most of the delay is a result of trying to get the rental car company to invoice you and provide enough information of the damage.

But the claim part with CSR was easier.

Just having the travel insurance for peace of mind is worth the price of the card.

The core travel insurance coverage between the The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve is identical. Because Chase issues both cards on the premium Visa Infinite network, they share an identical Guide to Benefits for travel protections. [1, 2, 3, 4]
There are no differences in their coverage limits, deductibles, or triggers. [1, 2]

Shared Coverage Limits

Protection TypeRitz-Carlton & Chase Sapphire Reserve Coverage
Trip Cancellation & InterruptionUp to $10,000 per person ($20,000 per trip max)
Trip Delay ReimbursementUp to $500 per ticket for delays over 6 hours or overnight
Primary Auto Rental CDWUp to $75,000 for theft and collision damage worldwide
Emergency EvacuationUp to $100,000 for medical transport (requires pre-authorization)
Emergency Medical & DentalUp to $2,500 (subject to a $50 deductible)
Baggage DelayUp to $100 per day for up to 5 days
Lost LuggageUp to $3,000 per passenger

The Real Differences Between the Cards
While the insurance policies are identical, the cards themselves diverge heavily on how you earn rewards and travel credits: [1, 2, 3]
  • The Points Systems: The CSR earns highly flexible Chase Ultimate Rewards points (transferable to multiple airlines/hotels), whereas the Ritz-Carlton card strictly earns Marriott Bonvoy points. [1]
  • Travel Credits: The CSR gives you a frictionless, automatic $300 annual travel credit applied to any travel category (transit, flights, hotels). The Ritz card provides a $300 airline incidental credit that requires you to call or message Chase to manually request credit for baggage fees, lounge passes, or seat upgrades. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Authorized Users: The Ritz card allows you to add authorized users for $0, and they receive their own Priority Pass lounge access. The CSR charges $195 per authorized user. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The annual fees are vastly different: the The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card carries a $450 annual fee, while the Chase Sapphire Reserve has an annual fee of $795. [1, 2]
This $345 gap widens further if you add family members or travel partners to your account. [1]

The Cost Breakdown

Fee CategoryRitz-Carlton CardChase Sapphire Reserve
Primary Cardholder$450$795
Authorized User Fee$0 per user$195 per user
Lounge Access for UsersFree users get full Priority Pass Select & Sapphire Lounge entryPaid users get full lounge entry

Why the Price Gap Matters
  • The Family Hack: A couple traveling together pays $450 total on the Ritz-Carlton card because the second card is free, and both people get independent airport lounge access. On the CSR, a couple pays $990 total ($795 + $195) for the exact same footprint. [1, 2]
  • The "Coupon Book" vs. Core Travel: The Sapphire Reserve attempts to justify its higher fee by bundling heavy lifestyle statement credits (like DoorDash, dining, and hotel perks). The Ritz card focuses strictly on travel, offsetting its lower fee with a Free Night Award (worth up to 85,000 points) and an airline credit. [1, 2, 3, 4]
(Note: The Ritz card is closed to new applicants. You can only get it by holding a Chase Marriott Bonvoy Consumer Card for 12 months and calling Chase to request a "product change" upgrade). [1, 2]

We are keeping it for now. We also made the $75,000 spend last year.

The Edit + dining credit + stub hub works for us for weekend trips to Atlanta. We have received $500 in the Edit credits, $300 in dining credits, $150 (I think?) in stub hub credits
The $500 southwest credit was used, A list has saved us $ on multiple flights and rekindled our fondness for SWA
We've had some nice breakfasts, maybe around $100 worth, as a result of our Diamond Elite status in IHG and have become more familiar with that hotel chain
I used the $250 shopping credit to buy an Apple watch
Definitely love Apple music. We could live without Apple TV but definitely like having it.

Plus we have earned and used quite a few UR points

I am awaiting my next AF in Feb and then ask for retention. If not, downgrade to Freedom and then get SUB from CSP.
Wanted to keep my URs but may consider doing this too (after xfr'ing all my URs to Hyatt), if needed...

The Hyatt transfer is going to be 4:3 for CSP. May as well move them before downgrading if that's where you want to use them, at which point you could do a new card.
absolutely; will move before PC to CSP or Chase freedom etc, of course..
TY!

@mountainboy I hope this is true. That would bring me much closer to Breakeven on the AF. Of course if the other benefits are reduced, or they raise the AF again, or DD requires delivery which eats the $15 in fees and tips, this becomes a non-starter and I will move on.

Wait & see....
Glad they are at least trying to make coupons less painful & actually usable but have to wait for all the gotcha's...
Also, shows that if we as cardholders walk away or share our feedback with Chase, the numbers & the feedback makes Chase re-assess their product coupon strategy.
Had to use AmEx Platinum CS for changing dates on a FHR reservation; staff were excellent; knew exactly what I was trying to do (save a credit from prior year) & reached out to resort inventory desk to assist on backend when AmEx's own systems won't allow them to change dates (without cancel & rebook which would have lost the credit). Far superior CS than most other travel portals & the like... Plus, almost no wait to speak with CS, unlike many other phone trees with their chatbot assistants...

When does that go into effect?

Chase needs to add a lounge in Denver. The airport is growing, adding new gates all of the time, and it's a need because the only option we have is Capital One Venture X lounge, and we both have to have the card to use it, making it a somewhat ridiculous necessity to use any lounge. If planes weren't constantly delayed due to wind and weather in CO, I wouldn't really care, but we have used the lounge a lot, and I would rather use the Chase lounge, which should be in Concourse B, which is where we fly in/out for most of our airline travel.

Glad you found a way to change your FHR reservation and save the credit. I may need to use that someday.

As for Doordash, I don't use food delivery ennough for that to be of much interest to me.

Immediately for new cardholders, Octoberish for existing ones.
We love the hotel in SFO. It's a great stop to/from the islands. I need to transfer some UR points today. I don't want to forget. Thank you for clarifying that.
