Chase Sapphire Reserve is changing... Alternative cards with high points for MVC maintenance fee payments?

For existing Chase Reserve card holders, are the 4x on direct hotel bookings active now or on October 26? I understand that the 1.5 benefit only applies to points earned prior to October 26 but curious when the 4x kicks in for existing CR holders.
For existing card holders the change to 4x for Hotels/Airfare does not occur until October 26.

That is my understanding as well, I believe you will only get the 3X travel category for any hotel or Airfare charges.

This is a bit off topic, but....

It's spreading everywhere, like a highly contagious virus.

I'll add a positive note. After all, I don't want to be too much of a downer. My sweetheart has had a Sapphire Reserve for a number of years. Out of curiosity, I signed on to Chase Travel. Lo and behold, sitting there was a Points Boost redemption for a United Airlines nonstop flight to Japan in their Polaris Business class. I've been working on a trip to Japan for us, and had initially planned to use our American Airlines miles. But AA has upped their award tickets in Business class to Japan to 428,000 miles per seat. 428K per person is simply unreasonable. That's 856,000 miles for a couple!! The Chase Travel Points Boost offer beat that easily. It wasn't even close. It was also superior to the miles required on the United Airlines website. Moral to the story: check Chase Travel if you're planning something. You never know what you might find.

This is the first I have heard anything about this “rumor” and certainly hope it’s untrue.

I know! I booked Denver to San Juan in First Class for March and got a great deal with my points.

Still hoping I can get 3X on MF's.

In an effort to spend down my points, I did get a 2-cent redemption for one of their premium-category hotels with a halfway decent rate. Throw in breakfast each day, plus $100 credit for room charges---not a terrible deal.

I still don't think I am keeping the card, but this at least has me thinking about it.

There is a “The Edit” hotel in Buckhead, Atlanta. $369 for 2 nights, $100 credit, breakfast for 2 each morning. You get $250 back for two night bookings every 6 months, + $150 back at Sapphire dining restaurants, of which there are many nearby.

So that’s like $369-$250-$100= $20 for a weekend in Atlanta + one nice meal out. Im kind of ok with that.

Yes, that sounds good to me!

Since the new Chase Reserve rules only pay 1x on MF going forward, I guess I can make one last 3x purchase by prepaying estimated MF before the October changeover. I did check directly with Chase and rep recommended that the charge show up on my statement closing date, prior to October 26, 2025. So basically, submit to MVC in September. Maui Ocean Club 2BR OF will be over $4k/week, so worth it for 3x one last time. This card just becomes useful for travel insurance and primary rental car coverage now.

How many points do maint fees generate with the Amex Platinum? If Reserve card goes to 1, I would either pay with Ritz card or Amex platinum?

Why not with a Marriott card that gives 6x points for Marriott spend?

I agree as I have no problem getting 6 cents of value (and sometimes more like 12) off 6 Bonvoy points and struggle to get more than 4.5 cents of value off of 3 CSR points. But I understand that others feel differently.

My issue with the new CSR is with Disney, taxis, and all the other ‘travel’ that I will no longer be getting 3x points for.

You could product change the Boundless to the Ritz-Carlton card. The AF is $450, for which you get a $300 airline credit (we use it for seat upgrades) and an 85k cert. The RC card is not open to new applications, but you can product change the Boundless after you have it for at least 12 months.

@Huskerpaul , looks like they are nerfing RC soon :-(
AF rising to 695, per rumors...
The (Chase) Empire strikes again :-(

I wouldn't believe everything you read on Reddit.
Just read a post saying Chase PR folks have debunked this rumor. Crossing my fingers it is true. But there is always a fallback plan to any CC - cancel when your next AF posts ;)

I read the opposite, that Chase denied an increase to the Ritz Carlton card. Read it here:

Except these changes are all anticipated, with all other changes in premium card market...
We shall see in next few months..
The game evolves & so do we...

Amen!

*I did get the Bonvoy Boundless with plans to upgrade to RC next year but will see how it evolves over the next year.
It is either RC or CSR next year, based on whatever is the best option at that time..

I too have booked in United First class because they offered a 2X Boost to use points. They are currently offering the 1.5X on economy for now too, but business at 2X made it worth it for me.

They seem to only be anticipated by people posting on the internet that really have no inside information at all.

All premium travel credit cards incl CSR and AmEx Platinum, Aspire & Brilliant have significantly increased their AFs, over time.

Hence, an increase in AFs for RC is anticipated/expected (esp for unlimited free AUs + unlimited guests for lounge access to Chase Sapphire Lounges + 85k Marriott FNC award + airline/travel fee credit) are a ridiculously good value at current AF (& hence expected to go up, which would still be a good value, for most)...

Lots of these CSR changes were rumors on reddit before being confirmed by Chase...

As above, I am already in line for RC for next year (with Boundless card) but shall see, how this evolves...

TY!

Looks like Freedom Flex is being refreshed. Will there be limited product change options in the future due to massive CSR downgrades?

If they really don't want me to change producs, I guess I can just cancel it instead.

I am going out on a high note though. I'm currently sitting in the room I mentioned up-thread. For a shade over 50K points: two nights at the Fairmont in Boston, in an upgraded room. There was a small charcuterie tray waiting for me when I check in. I'll have breakfast covered both days, my lobster roll and mocktail were covered, and I have a few bucks leftover to get a coffee after I get back from the Red Sox game later today.

I am not mad about this.

Is there a card that will count MF at 3% or is 2% the best option?

We loved our Reserve cards (we each had our own account.) Soon we will have zero accounts once I do the Freedom to Preferred switch.

Another question: It seems as though points will have an expiration date at the changeover. Will the Freedom to Preferred flip start a new clock on them?
Costco's Citicard does 3% on travel. I haven't seen how it categorizes maintenance fees because I have used CSR because of the effective 4.5% return when you then redeem the points through the travel portal. Once CSR no longer yields that, I may try using the Costco card and see how they code.
