First time traveling to Charleston and we rented a car at the airport. Our destination is Hilton Head, SC. On the rental agreement is notes that the vehicle rental location is off-site. What confuses me is that you must call for the shuttle. Is this a common practice for this airport to call for a shuttle to the rental car site? We always just went outside at other airports and waited for a shuttle. Never had to call.

Some car rental agencies don't run circulating shuttles, only when called.
It's like calling for a shuttle to a hotel or off-site parking, which I do a lot.

You might save some $$ by taking Uber to a rental agency's "city" location.
If I rent locally (special reason), I use a hotel office instead of the airport.

When we rented two 3 months ago, it was on-site----in fact only about 100 yard walk to the desk, and another 100 yards to the car.

I've been to many small airports where shuttles are 'on demand' and occasionally aren't even shuttles - just vehicles from the lot. I rarely check bags, so if I'm told to call, I usually call when I'm in the jet way.

Brewster Green (two weeks).
They've been on site. They have done a big renovation of the airport but since our #1 Cowboys Fan above said they were still on site three months ago, I suspect they still are....unless you've rented from a company that is not one of the usual brands. It shouldn't be a big deal to shuttle to it if so.

To get to Hilton Head, don't let your GPS take you across I-26 W to I-95 S. From the airport you will get on to I-526 to the right towards Savannah/Citadel Mall and connect with Hwy 17 South. It's a lovely drive but do keep the speed limit as there are a number of "speed traps." Look for the signs of the dikes which mark the old rice fields as you cross over marsh/river areas. There's a couple of good seafood/soulfood restaurants on your way, two in Ravenel and probably others.

Not uncommon for small airports. Sometimes it just adds a few minutes to the wait. Sometimes considerably longer.

Who did you rent from----check the address, etc.----are you sure it's 'off-site'?

I dropped car off at Charleston airport in November. It is on site, but once you enter terminal from end where car rental lot is, it is a good bit of a walk inside the terminal. It may have seemed long because I was overloaded with bags. Maybe the do run a shuttle from the main entrance, but I wouldn't wait for it.
Kind of reminds me of the Pisa Italy airport, car rental. There is a shuttle, but while we waited and waited for a bus the first time, we noticed people following the marked walking path to the rental offices. So away we went. Have done the same the last two trips thru Pisa.
The worst rental situation I have been to in the Baltimore airport. It must be 2-3 miles away. No walking there.

That wasn't my experience. It may have been 150 yards from where I left my car with the attendant to the entry door, and perhaps a slight amount further than that to meet my wife at American counter.

Our rental car is from Dollar. It notes that the rental area is off site. Are there two airports in Charleston? I see Charleston Airport and Charleston International Airport. PLEASE tell me they are one in the same.

There is Charleston International Airport (CHS) and Charleston Executive Airport (JZI). Most likely you are flying into CHS.

I have rented from Dollar at CHS and they are off-site. Moreover, they close sometime in the evening and if you have a flight delay you could arrive after they are closed.

Oh no!! This trip keeps getting crazier and crazier. Comparing prices of car rentals at the airport ~ the cost is almost double of what I'm paying at Dollar.

You will be fine. We have rented from thrifty several times and they are also offsite. You take a shuttle from the curb about a mile to get your car. It really was no big deal.
