Years ago we enjoyed a timeshare stay near Lake Lure NC and went to Chimney Rock a couple of times during the week. As a result of the rain from hurricane Helene there has been brutal flooding. Here is a before and after photo of Chimney Rock.

I am also just reading that Ashville NC is cut off by roads and only accessible by air due to washouts and major flooding.

OH MY GOODNESS! Who would expect that much damage inland.

This was a monster storm, moving quickly, and covering hundreds of miles. Devastating floods and tornadoes were predicted for the mountains of NC, at least 48 hours in advance. And it had been raining--due to an entirely different system--since about Wed across NC. The truly stunning thing is the possibly break of the Lake Lure dam. But it's hard, I guess, to imagine "devastating" until one actually sees it happen.

Wow. I have been through a couple of hurricanes on the East Coast of Canada in the fast five years, but wow that is something.

Brewster Green (two weeks).
From what I am reading the dam at Lake Lure held but water rose so high that water went over it. I wonder why they didn't drain some in preparation for the storm? The Lake Lure area had flooding back in the mid to late 1990's that really tore up the area and the lovely stream along side the highway were stripped of their trees along the shore. We used to picnic along them and it just wasn't the same after that and we only went back one more time.

This is just heartbreaking. I own a few weeks at Foxrun in Lake Lure - any idea how they make out?

Luckily, I'd say it's not common. In Sept '09, I was living in Cincinnati when the remnants of a Gulf storm or Hurricane worked its way up there. Actually, we were driving back from WV and noticed the change in Lexington, KY. Driving on the interstate in the Cincy area was terrifying.

It had been a dry summer, drought conditions. So many large trees came down in the winds. At least one killed a person inside their home. The power was out for a long, long time. I lived in town near Xavier and hospitals. So, I was only w/o power maybe a day or two. Friends just a few miles away didn't have their power restored for a week. Some were w/o it for 10 days in the 'burbs. Lots of extension cords running from houses that had power to neighbors who did not. Lots of neighborhood BBQ's to cook up the contents of people's freezers. Grateful it was a warm time of year as opposed to winter which would be worse.

That may have been Hurricane Ike in September 2008? I remember losing power then as the storm maintained a strong windfield when it went over southwest Ohio.

Chimmey Rock and Asheville, NC are just two beautful areas; it is very sad to see the devasation of those two places.

ill try to post updates as i get them, but everywhere i look more and more videos of devastation keep popping up well outside florida.

I admittedly had no idea how much rain this storm dumped in georgia, south and north carolina, tennessee and kentucky....so many of these towns like asheville are straight underwater today it is very sobering.
